Combining Air Purification Systems with your Arizona Heating and Cooling System Can Improve Your Health
The number one most often prescribed drugs today are respiratory drugs such as Claritin, and Allegra. According to the American Lung Association, there are now almost 70 million people across North America with upper respiratory problems AND it’s on the rise! That’s one in 4 people with respiratory problems with the elderly and children being the most affected. With statistics like these you have to be asking yourself how you can clean up the air in your home. Most experts agree the most effective way to clean the air in your home is through the use of filtration within your Arizona heating and cooling system. Several different processes of varying effectiveness can be used to purify air. Different processes may remove different contaminants, so there is an advantage in using more than one process in a purifier. We’ll discuss ultraviolet germicidal irradiation and ozone generators today and filters in tomorrow’s post.
* Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation- UVGI can be used to sterilize air as it passes UV lamps via forced air. Air purification UVGI systems can be freestanding units with shielded UV lamps that use a fan to force air past the UV light. Other systems are installed in forced air systems so that the circulation for the premises moves micro-organisms past the lamps. Key to this form of sterilization is placement of the UV lamps and a good filtration system to remove the dead micro-organisms. For example, forced air systems by design impede line-of-sight, thus creating areas of the environment that will be shaded from the UV light. However, a UV lamp placed at the coils and drain pan of your Arizona heating and cooling system will keep micro-organisms from forming in these naturally damp places.
* Ozone generators – These produce ozone, and are sometimes sold as whole house air cleaners. Unline ionizers ozone generators are designed to produce significant amounts of ozone, a strong oxidant gas which can oxidize many other chemicals. The only safe use of ozone generators is in unoccupied rooms, utilizing “shock treatment” commercial ozone generators that produce over 3000 mg of ozone per hour. Restoration contractors use these types of ozone generators to remove smoke odors after fire damage, musty smells after flooding, mold (including toxic molds), and the stench caused by decaying flesh which cannot be removed by bleach or anything else except for ozone. However, it is not healthy to breathe ozone gas, and one should use extreme caution when buying a room air purifier that also produces ozone.
These are two options for working air filtration into the heating and cooling system that is an essential part of an Arizona home. In our next post we will discuss filter based purification.

Heating systems in Phoenix Arizona
With forecasted highs of 98 degrees in the middle of October, most people don’t think about the heating portion of their HVAC system. It doesn’t seem as important as their air conditioning. Until it gets cold that is. But as residents of the valley of the sun know, it still gets cold enough in winter for the need to heat your home. You don’t need to see snowdrifts outside to feel the chill of the dessert at near freezing temperatures. Plus, after months of triple digit heat, it doesn’t take much to feel uncomfortable.
People generally believe that Phoenix heating systems don’t get the wear and tear from constant use in Arizona. But the fact is, most heating systems in Arizona are heat pumps. What this means is that after running all summer as an air conditioner, when it runs in heat mode, it is an air conditioner running backwards. The same components that ran all summer long are now running again, backwards. The condenser fan motor, blower motor and the compressor are running year round. They are still running just as they did in the summertime, only moving the refrigerant in the opposite direction. they actually “air condition the outdoor air”. In summer they absorb heat from inside your home and move it to the outdoor air. In Winter they absorb heat from the outdoor air and move it into your home.
If you do have a gas furnace, its true, the compressor and outdoor fan motor do not run in the winter, but, the indoor blower that ran all summer is running all winter. Gas furnaces also produce carbon monoxide. Improperly vented flue pipes can cause serious health problems. The fact that the furnace isn’t used all summer can increase the chance of birds or other critters nesting in your flue pipe. This can prevent proper venting causing unsafe conditions for you and your family.
Routine maintenance in the fall may seem silly, but it is just as important as your summer tune up. Checking combustion on gas furnaces and defrost operation of heat pumps can save you energy, frustration when the cold does come, and assure your safety in the winter months.
Most Heating and cooling companies offer maintenance programs that provide a summer tune up and a winter tune up. Other benefits include discounts on repairs, extended service hours, extended warranties on repairs made and other services to keep your system running as efficiently as possible.
Consumer Reports states in the June 1998 issue (page 3)
” Consider purchasing a service plan, perticulary if it combines cooling and heating functions. Most plans include 2 visits… a plan may allow the contractor to spot problems before they lead to a breakdown. You may also get discounts on repairs and recieve priority service, which could be a blessing should your cooling system break down during those blistering summer months or on a bitter cold day”
Air conditioning by Jays Comfort Team offer 3 tiers on Comfort Club Memberships to meet your individual needs.
Each offer amazing benefits to keep you comfortable year round. To learn more visit www.dialcomfort.com or give us a call @ 480-922.4455.

WARNING!!!!!
Don’t buy a new air conditioning or heating system from any home center such as Home Depot or Sears without knowing who the installing contractor is.
Most people don’t realize when you purchase a new heating or cooling system from a home center or chain store, the work is performed by subcontractors who are charged 10% for the job. This means they could be cutting corners to make a profit. Don’t get caught with a subcontracting nightmare!! Investing in a new energy efficient heating and cooling system isn’t just buying the “box”. You are depending on the installing contractor to do the install correctly so you can enjoy the efficiency promised, and a long system life. The most important day in an air conditioner’s life is the day it is installed. Proper equipment size, proper duct design and quality installation practices are crucial to performance and the longevity of your investment.
At Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team we never subcontract any of our installation work. All installations and service are done by our highly trained, certified technicians. 100% of our technicians are NATE certified ( North American Trade Excellence) 100% are certified master technicians by the Arizona Heat Pump Council. We are recommended by APS, SRP and Southwest Gas. All of the training and certifications are to assure that our clients receive the very best service when purchasing a new system, have a breakdown or just having routine maintenance done on their system.
The North Carolina Alternative Energy Corporation a non-profit organization, examined Air Conditioning manufacturers’ efficiencies versus the actual efficiencies that result after installation; they found the following:
90% of the units tested exhibited some sort of energy-wasting, comfort-robbing problem!
Other significant HVAC industry comfort energy related surveys reveal that:
*93% of equipment installed have Duct Leakage resulting in poor indoor air quality, health and safety concerns, drafts and uneven temperatures and may DOUBLE HVAC portion of the energy bill
*54% of equipment installed have incorrect refrigerant charge resulting in increased failure rate, reduced moisture removal, equipment typically noisier, uneven temperatures and could add as much as 17% to operation costs. Reduce life of system and major components (Compressors) causing elimination of ROI.
*47% of equipment installed are over sized resulting in equipment not running enough to wring out moisture, air in sunlit & shade rooms does not mix, equipment typically noisier and shorter equipment life
*70% of equipment installed have incorrect air flow resulting in uneven temperatures, poor moisture control, noisy grilles and registers and could add as much as 10% to operating costs

Arizona air conditioner repair is rarely a worry for most people unless something truly goes wrong. As long as we stay cool, most Arizonans keep their air conditioners at full blast and don’t even think about wasted energy or potential problems.
APS wants you to start thinking about Arizona air conditioner repair and they are prepared to pay you up to $250 to do so. If you hire a BPI certified contractor to test your duct system and repair leaks APS will refund you up to $250.
According to a recent APS study, many Arizona homes have as much as 33% of their systems airflow completely lost because of leaky ducts. That’s a full third of their cooling bill completely wasted every month.
What’s more, on average 15% of cooling capacity is wasted due to duct leakage. With properly sealed ducts, the waste goes down significantly. And since the average home spends 50% of their annual energy bill on heating and cooling, the money you save by eliminating leaky ducts can be phenomenal.
Many who have had their ducts sealed properly have reported savings of more than $200 on their annual energy costs.
So to recap, APS will pay you $250 to get your system tested and in addition you will likely save $200 every year on your energy bill. That is a total of $450 save your first year, and a $200 savings for many years to come.
So what’s the catch? There isn’t one, you just have to make sure that the contractor you hire is BPI certified and that they are aware of and participating in this program. They will know exactly what to do and take care of the rest for you.
Air Conditioning by Jay is a BPI certified contractor and our technicians have been performing same day air conditioning repair in Arizona since 1983. We have helped many of our clients participate in this program and we can help you too. Call us today at 602-266-3678 or contact us using our privacy assured online form.

The SRP Time of Use Plan is a way for Arizona home owners to save money on their energy bills by shifting their energy usage from busy peak periods to underutilized off-peak periods. This plan allows SRP to better distribute energy to all of their customers around Arizona.
For those who choose to use this program, it offers a way to save money (an average of 8% annually) by simply altering their energy habits towards early morning and nighttime usage.
Unfortunately, not everyone will benefit from this program. The people who save the most using the Time of Use Plan are:
- Not usually home on weekdays during peak hours
- Able to perform chores and use appliances (including dishwashers, washer/dryers, pool filters, etc.) during off-peak hours
- Able to use a programmable thermostat
- Willing to provide SRP employees access to their meters on a monthly basis
- Full time residents. Snow birds will not get much savings from this program
- The program’s peak times differ depending on the time of year. From May 1 to October 31 peak hours are from Monday to Friday 1 PM to 8 PM. From November 1 to April 30 peak hours are from Friday, 5 AM to 9 AM and 5 PM to 9 PM.
SRP also provides a monthly breakdown of how much money you saved using this plan so you can know if the plan is right for you.

As anyone with an air conditioner in Arizona knows, energy costs can get pretty high during those hot summer months when keeping the air conditioner on full blast in the only way to stop yourself from melting into the floor. Even with a new high efficiency system, there is no avoiding paying a bundle for energy costs this summer.
Luckily, Arizona Public Service (APS) offers a solution that can help cut down your energy costs without too much hassle. It’s called the Time Advantage Plan and for many people it is a great way to save money for the more important things in life.
Under this rate plan, you receive a cheaper energy rate during off-peak hours (from 9 PM to 9 AM on weekdays, and all weekend) while paying a little bit more during peak hours. According to APS, if you are using more than 60% of your energy during off peak hours, you will see significant savings using this plan.
To take full advantage of this plan, you will want to do any energy intensive chores such as dishwashing, laundry, pool maintenance, and so on during the night or early morning so that you will only need minimal energy during the day. You might also consider upping the temperature inside just a few degrees to increase the savings even more.
This plan has worked for many people who are at work during many of the peak hours anyways, so changing energy patterns is often not a huge shift.
APS also offers a rate comparison chart after 6 months so you can truly measure if you have saved money.

How to find the latest and greatest rebates to save you a ton when buying a new air conditioner in Arizona.
During the exceedingly hot Arizona summers, having a working air conditioner in your home ranks just behind food and shelter as the most important part of your continued survival. Without a working air conditioner in Arizona many people are forced to leave their homes and take refuge in better cooled places until it is bearable to return late at night when the temperature is slightly lower. As anyone who has needed to have their Arizona air conditioner repaired will tell you, this is far from an ideal or comfortable situation to be in for any amount of time.
If you are worried that your older air conditioner might break during a week of 115 degree days or you are simply interested in the energy savings and increased comfort that a new high efficiency air conditioner in Arizona provides, then it might be time to do some research. Many people who are shopping for a new unit find that no matter where they look, the price of a new unit is very expensive. However, they don’t realize that with the large savings they will have on their energy bill, the increased comfort they will gain, and the decreased harm to the environment, the unit is actually a far more affordable investment then they think.
Of course choosing to invest in an Arizona air conditioner is still a big purchase, but thanks to a variety of rebates from a number of sources, your air conditioner might end up costing you a lot less than you thought, even before the energy savings begin.
In Arizona, the utility companies APS and SRP both offer excellent rebates for anyone looking to purchase a new high efficiency system. Additionally, there are many tax incentives and rebates from all levels of government as well as a number of private organizations looking to encourage more energy efficient homes.
For an excellent way of finding many of the rebates you are eligible for, check out this rebate calculator.
If you need help choosing the right Arizona air conditioner that will keep your home cool and get you all of the best rebates, give Air Conditioning by Jay a call. We have helped over 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area with their air conditioning needs and we can help you too. Give us a call at 602-266-3678 today.

Understanding the Quality Installation Standard and why you need it to select the right Arizona air conditioning contractor.
Choosing the right contractor to install your new air conditioner in Arizona is a decision that could end up costing you a lot more money if you don’t find the right people for the job. An incorrect installation can cause even the best system to break more easily, require more maintenance, and use much more energy than it actually needs. In fact, a top of the line 19 SEER system will be no more energy efficient then an inexpensive 13 SEER system if installed incorrectly.
So how can you find a contractor that you know will provide a high quality installation using just the right system to keep you cool and your energy bill low? The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) think they have an answer.
The Quality Installation (QI) Standard was introduced last year as a way to guarantee that your Arizona air conditioner installation met top standards that promote both comfort and energy savings. Already these QI standards have been embraced by both local and federal governments as well as utility companies.
It is expected that additional rebates will be offered by utility companies to consumers as a way to encourage using a contractor who follows the QI standards in the near future.
By choosing a QI contractor, you can expect an installation that adheres to the best industry practices for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. Additionally, a properly installed air conditioner will require fewer repairs and even extend the life of the unit significantly.
Air Conditioning by Jay is proud to have incorporated much of the Quality Installation Standard with all new air conditioning systems we install. We are known for our consistent record of high quality Arizona air conditioner installations. To find out why we are trusted by more than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area, visit our website or call us at 602-266-3678 today.

A profile of the new Carrier Infinity Control and its benefits for air conditioners in Arizona
As anyone who has ever used a television knows, remote controls aren’t easy to use. There is one for the volume, one for changing the channels and yet another for playing movies. And even worse, each control has so many buttons that you have to be some kind of genius to figure them all out.
Just like television remote controls, air conditioner controls are often just as hard to figure out. To make matters worse, controls for air conditioners in Arizona are used much less often than ones for the TV and are therefore less well known and harder to figure out.
The folks at Carrier realized this was a problem and so they have installed the Infinity Control in their new line of Infinity System air conditioners. The Infinity Control allows for longer heating and cooling cycles at lower fan speeds to save energy and keep temperatures more consistent throughout the home.
Additionally, the control panel is a large, easy to read digital display with a backlight and it can be used to control all six comfort features of the system: temperature, humidity, airflow, ventilation, IAQ, and zoning.
The Infinity Control will also let you know when your system needs maintenance or when your filters need to be changed. This allows you to take the guess work out of keeping your system running perfectly.

Today’s air conditioners in Arizona are lasting longer then ever and are reaching new levels of energy efficiency unimaginable just a few years ago. They are also quieter, more reliable, and easier to use the ever before. For those homes served by APS for their electricity, you receive by mail an Energy Use And Costs report annually for your home. It details your monthly energy usage and costs, and compares it against the previous year.
This very useful report lets you see how many kWh (kilowatt hours) you are using per month, how much was on peak and off, your total energy costs for the month, and averages out your costs per day. With this report you can see exactly where and when you are using the most power and your total energy expense for the year.
As they say, anything that is measured can be improved. You can better manage your Phoenix air conditioning energy expense by using less during the peak times, 9am to 9pm Monday Friday. By shifting your heaviest air conditioning time to off peak, you can save money. You can also do your clothes washing, running your dishwasher to off peak hours to increase your savings.

Arizona Public Service (APS) has a program for residential customers to save energy and money on your electric bill by replacing your regular incandescent bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFS).
Although not offering a rebate, APS has teamed up with local retailers who are giving large discounts when you purchase Energy Star CFS bulbs. Here are the reasons you want to change out your bulbs:
- Energy Star CFS bulbs use 75% less energy than conventional light bulbs
- They run much cooler, so they don’t heat up your house in the warmer months
- You will save more than $30 per bulb over the life of the bulb
- They are available in many different sizes and shapes
To find a list of retailers participating in this program near you, visit the APS website.
According to APS, if every American household replaced just ONE bulb with a CFL, it would save enough energy to light every Arizona home for one full year!

Everyone knows that it makes sense to conserve electricity. We shut the lights off when we leave a room, we turn down the air conditioning at night because it saves us money on our electric bill.
But did you know that APS (Arizona Public Service) that serves most of the valley has rebates to help you cover the costs of repairs and new equipment to help you afford them? Take a look at some of the current rebates that are available.
APS AC Rebates
High Efficiency AC Rebates
Residential customers replacing existing heat pumps or AC systems with high efficiency equipment may be eligible for up to a $400 rebate from APS.
Quality Installation Rebate
Quality installations of new heat pumps or AC systems help ensure you get the most value and efficiency from your system. You can earn an additional $100 rebate from APS on qualifying systems that are installed by an APS Qualified Contractor.
Duct Test and Repair Rebate
Improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home by having a professional contractor seal your home’s heating/cooling duct system. And you could also qualify for up to a $250 rebate from APS.
So now there is no reason to put off those repairs or getting rid of inefficient older equipment that is causing you to throw money out the window.
I also want you to know that APS knows what they are talking about when they say the rebates are available to people who have a professional contractor do the work. It’s just not something that a handyman without the training and licensing is going to be able to qualify you for the rebate.
To have A/C by Jay, an APS qualified contractor, give you an estimate or give you more information about the rebate program, please contact our customer service department at 602 266-3678 or visit our website at www.AcByJ.com.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has approved new heating efficiency standards for furnaces and boilers. Don’t worry, these standards do not take affect until 2015. Remember our post about AFUE, the unit of measurement that gauges how much energy used by a furnace is converted into usable heat?
The new standards raise the levels for the following heating devices:
Natural Gas Furnaces from 78% to 80% AFUE
Natural Gas Boilers from 80% to 82% AFUE
Oil Boilers from 80% to 83% AFUE
In prior post we covered a variety of units that already meet or exceed the new standard. Some units exceed a 90% AFUE rating, so if you are looking at a new purchase, rest assured, the furnace you buy today can easily meet or exceed the government’s newly established efficiency rating.
If you are curious about your current’s units efficiency rating, it should be posted in materials from the manufacturer. If you cannot find that information, feel free to contact us at AC By Jay and a member of our comfort team can help determine your units efficiency rating.

SRP is proposing summer rate hikes of 9.3% as a way to prompt customers to conserve more energy during the hottest hours of summer.
The rate hikes would take place in July and August when energy use can spike with the temperature. When that happens, utility companies must purchase energy from the Pacific Northwest or other areas.
Their proposed plan dramatically increases temperatures from 3 to 6 pm when the demand is the highest and the price on the open market, from other providers, is similarly high.
Mark Bonsall, SRP’s Chief Financial Officer indicated that customers who “invest in a thermostat with a time can easily take advantage of the time-of-day plan and cut unneeded peak-energy use while they are at work.”
Here at AC By Jay, we’ve explained the benefits of a programmable thermostat. Such a thermostat would allow you to program your cooling system to use less energy while you are at work but start cooling your house before you get home.
If you are concerned with this rate hike and want to find out other ways to help reduce your cooling bill, to prepare for those coming hot summer months, contact a member of our Comfort Team.

Here at AC By Jay we are proud of the awards and certifications we’ve earned.
It is especially gratifying, however, when a customer driven, customer focused website recognizes our commitment to customer satisfaction and excellence.
Angie’s List (http://www.angieslist.com) has recognized AC by Jay with its preferred provider award.
Angie’s list is a website where various home contractors and service providers can be registered and rated. This helps customers by comparing the rating of various service providers they may be searching for and finding those that offer coupons and other discounts. The ratings and feedback is provided by customers themselves and the service providers do not pay for placement. Therefore the feedback is unbiased.
At AC by Jay we recognize that word of mouth and customer referrals are a huge part of how we grow. This is simply another form of that same word of mouth marketing.

At AC By Jay we are proud of the reputation we’ve built as experts in the Air Conditioning and Heating Industry. Recently, Michael Goater, our Sales Manager, was interviewed by ABC 15’s Kathryn Garcia.
Michael did great on camera but more important, he emphasized a very simple truth; due to lower demand and the seasonal nature of the Air Conditioning industry, especially in Arizona, customers can save significantly when purchasing a new AC unit now rather than the middle of summer.
Additionally, even a unit that is just 10 years old may be costing you a lot in your energy cost (30-60%).
If you want to find out more about the money you can save with a new AC Unit or if you just want to congratulate Michael on his new celebrity status, give us a call.

Arizona’s Air Conditioning by Jay President Bryce Johnson attended an elite gathering of HVAC company owners last week in Omaha, Nebraska.
Referred to as the “Eagle’s Nest,” this invitation only gathering of HVAC company owners was a “who’s who” of the heating and air conditioning industries, with companies representing all parts of the United States in attendance.
Participants discussed best practices for air conditioner selection, installation and service. Also discussed were innovative programs designed to improve customer service, customer satisfaction and customer retention.
“It was a great three days of learning and idea exchange that I am sure will benefit all users of air conditioning in Arizona,” said Bryce Johnson, “and I am sure Arizona heating system users will benefit as well.”

Now’s the perfect time to replace the air conditioning system in your Arizona home.
Here’s why
1. Manufacturer’s are cutting prices to move air conditioning in Arizona. Our state is an attractive target for manufacturer’s to squeeze additional sales from and they are pricing systems according.
2. APS offers a rebate program saving you $400 or more. See all the details here.
3. Most new Arizona air conditioning systems qualify for federal tax credits as well.
4. It is not as hot out now and not as many people are calling for air conditioning repair in Arizona. Companies are more aggressive now to earn your business as they need to keep their technicians working.
If you need a new air conditioning system in Arizona, contact Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team. We have been serving Arizona since 1983 and have a complaint free record with the Better Business Bureau and the Registrar of Contractors.

Trane appears to be the U.S. government’s company of choice for reducing energy usage in air conditioners, heat pumps, and other HVAC systems.
Last month we discussed the Department of Energy agreement with Trane to reduce energy usage in that department by $90 million. Now Trane has announced a contract with the U.S. Navy to similarly replace aging and energy-wasting air conditioners and HVAC systems to save the navy $33 million in energy bills.
The air conditioners that the Navy is receiving are not off-the-shelf models by any means. One cooling and heating system uses nearby waste water to power a large heat pump installation.
To find out how you can have an quality, energy-efficient air conditioner from the company that is saving millions of dollars of taxpayer (i.e. your) money, contact the Comfort Team.

Trane has signed a contract with the United States Department of Energy to reduce the government department’s energy costs by $90 million. Trane will replace air conditioners, heater pumps, and other HVAC resources at Department of Energy facilities across the country.
The Department of Energy has issued this project in response to an Executive Order issued by President Bush in January which requires government departments to reduce their energy usage. By working with Trane to install new energy efficient air conditioners and heat pumps, along with other solutions, the Department of Energy will reduce its energy usage by 30%.
Trane is a manufacturer of quality air conditioners, heat pumps, and other HVAC products for homes and offices. Trane’s air conditioners and other products are some of the most energy efficient available. For homes and small businesses, Trane air conditioners are sold through local contractors certified by Trane. Usually only large contracts, such as the federal government, contract directly with the manufacturer.
You can reduce your energy consumption in your home or office with a new Trane air conditioner. To find out how, contact the Comfort Team.

It should come as no surprise that the United States Department of Energy is concerned with energy efficient air conditioner installation, air conditioner maintenance, and air conditioner usage. Back in 1999, a report was published covering the key topics regarding air conditioning installation and service that we have previously discussed. These topics include how air conditioners work, how air conditioners fail and why regular maintenance is important, cleaning air ducts, proper sizing, SEER ratings of air conditioner efficiency, and how to choose a good contractor. While written eight years ago, this information is still valid, accurate and important to consider when trying to keep cool as we start to head into monsoon season.
The only thing that has changed is the numbers. SEER ratings for example have improved since 1999. The article cites a minimum SEER rating of 10, though the new minimum is 13. The highest SEER rating is now 20, rather than the 17 cited in the article.
Despite these changes in numbers, the advice and information given is still valid and following it will help ensure that your air conditioner cools your home as efficiently, economically and comfortably as possible.

Back in May 1995, John Proctor completed a study on air conditioner sizing. The article Bigger is Not Better: Sizing Air Conditioners Properly reports the study’s findings, which remain central to proper air conditioner sizing and air conditioning installation to this day.
The study found that 53% or more of air conditioners were improperly sized. It also found that many air conditioning contractors did not properly calculate the required air conditioner capacity and that the method used to calculate capacity varied widely from one company to another. The worst offenders either chose sizes based solely on a home owner’s square footage, or fell into the trap of thinking that bigger is better.
To properly calculate the appropriate air conditioner capacity, there-by saving money and having a more comfortably cooled home, several factors need to be considered such as humidity and indoor and outdoor air temperatures. Improperly sized air conditioners will often not run for long enough (a condition known as short-cycling) and will use more power, as well as being more expensive to purchase.
Air Conditioning Contractors of America developed a standard called Manual J, which is the approved method for calculating appropriate air conditioner capacity.
By hiring a contractor who properly calculates air conditioner size, you will save money and have a cooler, more comfortable home.

Not long from now, you will be receiving your first electric bill that includes an entire month of air conditioner use. You will open that bill and one of the first things to cross your mind will be, “how can I save money?” APS and air conditioning companies know this.
This knowledge is why when you install a highly energy efficient air conditioner in your home, APS will give you a 250 or 400 dollar rebate. That is in addition to the money you will save by having an air conditioner that constantly uses less power.
According to a quote on APS’ website, if only 4,000 people installed more efficient air conditioners, enough energy would be saved to power every house in Prescott for a year. That is a savings you can see each time an electric bill arrives while you are using an energy efficient air conditioner.

Air conditioners use up a lot of power, which means that we pay utility companies such as SRP and APS a lot of money to power our comfort living. Because of this, it is always nice to hear about how these utility companies are giving back to the community. According to this article in The Business Journal of Phoenix, SRP has won an award for the amount of volunteer work its employees engage in. More than 85 percent of SRP’s 4,300 employees volunteer their free time to charitable causes.
Every year, the Points of Light Foundation recognizes five companies that are leaders in giving back to the community. For the second time, SRP will be one of those companies.
So when you turn on your air conditioner or see those summer electric bills, keep in mind that your money is going to an organization that really is giving back to the community.

If you were looking for one more reason to have an energy efficient air conditioner installed, here it is. The Arizona Corporation Commission has approved an APS rate hike of 6.8%. Installing an air conditioning system with a high SEER rating was already a great way to save money on your air conditioning bill, but now the savings will be even better. Heat pump manufacturers such as Trane, Lennox and Amana produce highly energy efficient air conditioners designed to save you money even as APS raises their rates. By installing an air conditioner with a high SEER rating (to learn how increased SEER ratings will save you money, click here) you can qualify for a rebate from APS in addition to using less energy. To find out more, contact the AC By Jay Comfort Team.

Professionals from the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) Alliance met with representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on April 11th to discuss potential solutions to the growing need for well-educated skilled workers. According to this article on the Air Conditioning Contractors of America’s website, 30% of America’s incoming freshman high school students fail to earn their diploma. Despite this, most government funding is aimed at promoting college and university environments. This focus has helped to create a deficit of skilled professionals in fields such as air conditioning. Reaching out to those students who are failing in the current system and helping them to see the benefits of a skilled trade job would help to fill the need while providing a job that pays well and provides lifelong and stable employment through learning a skill that is in very high demand and cannot be easily outsourced.
AC By Jay is looking for qualified air conditioning, heating, and water heater technicians in the Phoenix area. For more information, visit the AC By Jay careers page.

Most of us are not looking forward to temperatures rising above 100 degrees. But with the sweltering misery also come benefits for better breathing. Today’s East Valley Tribune had an article above the fold about allergies and how they relate to the weather. According to the article, the relatively wet winter followed by an early rise in temperature caused Arizona’s many imported plants to begin to pollinate early, causing this allergy season to have begun as early as February. But once temperatures break the 100-degree mark it becomes too hot for the imported plants which cause the majority of pollen-related allergic reactions, such as Bermuda grass, to pollinate and many allergy sufferers will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, and, literally, breathe better.
You can find the East Valley Tribune story, titled ‘Valley’s air is something to sneeze at’, at http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/87451.
To find out about how to have an air filter which can reduce the amount of pollen in your home’s air installed, contact the Comfort Team.

Arizona Public Service is Arizona’s largest electrical utility. If you have a home or business in Arizona there is a good chance you send them a check every month for your electric bill. What you may not know is that a small part of your APS payment goes to fund energy conservation.
One of the ways APS has used these funds, was to discover where the biggest and best opportunities exist for their customers to save money on their utility bills
This research led them to the development of the APS qualified contractor program. The APS qualified contractor program is designed to educate both the air conditioning and heating contractor, and the home or business owner as well.
It’s probably not much of a surprise that air conditioners and heat pumps are a very big part of the average Arizona electric bill. If your current air conditioner (AC) is not quite ready for summer duty, check out the AC rebate program. Rebates are offered to residential customers who replace existing heat pump or air conditioning units with new high-efficiency systems.
APS customers may qualify for rebates of $250 on units that are rated at 14 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and 12 EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) and $400 on units rated at 16 SEER and 14 EER. This program was approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) and is funded by APS customers.
We’re fully qualified to help you with the APS program. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

The East Valley Tribune is running a story about a problem many residents have had with their heat pumps due to the very low Phoenix weather. As we discussed last month a heat pump can be used to both heat and cool a home, depending on how the thermostat is set (see “What’s in an Air Conditioner” for how this process works). While this process normally functions without a problem, when the temperature drops below freezing, as it did a few nights ago, it can cause moisture to freeze in the coils used by the cooling fan. According to the article, this happened to many valley residents as the temperature dropped into the 30s on Sunday night. These unlucky residents experienced heat pumps blowing cold air into their already cold homes.
Thankfully, this problem is usually easy to resolve. From the article: “The best way (to remedy the situation) is to raise your thermostat and, even if it’s blowing cold air into your home, let it run for about a halfhour,” said Linda Poulter, office manager for Sundance Air Conditioning Co. in Tempe.
If after that, the heat pump still blows cold air, it may be in need of a repair, and a certified heat pump and air conditioner specialist such as the Comfort Team (http://www.dialcomfort.com) should be called.
You can read the entire text of the article on the East Valley Tribune’s website at http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/82809.
