Combining Air Purification Systems with your Arizona Heating and Cooling System Can Improve Your Health

The number one most often prescribed drugs today are respiratory drugs such as Claritin, and Allegra.  According to the American Lung Association, there are now almost 70 million people across North America with upper respiratory problems AND it’s on the rise! That’s one in 4 people with respiratory problems with the elderly and children being the most affected.  With statistics like these you have to be asking yourself how you can clean up the air in your home.  Most experts agree the most effective way to clean the air in your home is through the use of filtration within your Arizona heating and cooling system. Several different processes of varying effectiveness can be used to purify air. Different processes may remove different contaminants, so there is an advantage in using more than one process in a purifier.  We’ll discuss ultraviolet germicidal irradiation and ozone generators today and filters in tomorrow’s post.

* Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation- UVGI can be used to sterilize air as it passes UV lamps via forced air. Air purification UVGI systems can be freestanding units with shielded UV lamps that use a fan to force air past the UV light. Other systems are installed in forced air systems so that the circulation for the premises moves micro-organisms past the lamps. Key to this form of sterilization is placement of the UV lamps and a good filtration system to remove the dead micro-organisms. For example, forced air systems by design impede line-of-sight, thus creating areas of the environment that will be shaded from the UV light.  However, a UV lamp placed at the coils and drain pan of your Arizona heating and cooling system will keep micro-organisms from forming in these naturally damp places.

 * Ozone generators – These produce ozone, and are sometimes sold as whole house air cleaners. Unline ionizers ozone generators are designed to produce significant amounts of ozone, a strong oxidant gas which can oxidize many other chemicals. The only safe use of ozone generators is in unoccupied rooms, utilizing “shock treatment” commercial ozone generators that produce over 3000 mg of ozone per hour. Restoration contractors use these types of ozone generators to remove smoke odors after fire damage, musty smells after flooding, mold (including toxic molds), and the stench caused by decaying flesh which cannot be removed by bleach or anything else except for ozone. However, it is not healthy to breathe ozone gas, and one should use extreme caution when buying a room air purifier that also produces ozone.

These are two options for working air filtration into the heating and cooling system that is an essential part of an Arizona home.  In our next post we will discuss filter based purification.

Don’t Buy a new air conditioner or heating system from Retail Home Centers without knowing who is doing the work !!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

WARNING!!!!!

Don’t buy a new air conditioning or heating system from any home center such as Home Depot or Sears without knowing who the installing contractor is.

Most people don’t realize when you purchase a new heating or cooling system from a home center or chain store, the work is performed by subcontractors who are charged 10% for the job. This means they could be cutting corners to make a profit. Don’t get caught with a subcontracting nightmare!! Investing in a new energy efficient heating and cooling system isn’t just buying the “box”. You are depending on the installing contractor to do the install correctly so you can enjoy the efficiency promised, and a long system life. The most important day in an air conditioner’s life is the day it is installed. Proper equipment size, proper duct design and quality installation practices are crucial to performance and the longevity of your investment.

At Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team we never subcontract any of our installation work. All installations and service are done by our highly trained, certified technicians.  100% of our technicians are NATE certified ( North American Trade Excellence) 100% are certified master technicians by the Arizona Heat Pump Council. We are recommended by APS, SRP and Southwest Gas. All of the training and certifications are to assure that our clients receive the very best service when purchasing a new system, have a breakdown or just having routine maintenance done on their system.

The North Carolina Alternative Energy Corporation a non-profit organization, examined Air Conditioning manufacturers’ efficiencies versus the actual efficiencies that result after installation; they found the following:

90% of the units tested exhibited some sort of energy-wasting, comfort-robbing problem!
Other significant HVAC industry comfort energy related surveys reveal that:

*93% of equipment installed have Duct Leakage resulting in poor indoor air quality, health and safety concerns, drafts and uneven temperatures and may DOUBLE HVAC portion of the energy bill
*54% of equipment installed have incorrect refrigerant charge resulting in increased failure rate, reduced moisture removal, equipment typically noisier, uneven temperatures and could add as much as 17% to operation costs.  Reduce life of system and major components (Compressors) causing elimination of ROI.
*47% of equipment installed are over sized resulting in equipment not running enough to wring out moisture, air in sunlit & shade rooms does not mix, equipment typically noisier and shorter equipment life
*70% of equipment installed have incorrect air flow resulting in uneven temperatures, poor moisture control, noisy grilles and registers and could add as much as 10% to operating costs

Importance of Fall Tune Ups

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Living in Phoenix, AZ it is difficult to think about cooler temperatures with the known fact that Arizona is HOT.  With the weather starting to cool down we should all be aware of the importance of maintaining our heating equipment.

Maintaining your equipment is just as important in the Fall as it is in the Spring.  No one wants to have their equipment fail especially when you need it.  Air Conditioning by Jay recommends having your heating/cooling equipment maintained twice a year.  Once before each season occurs.  If you do regular maintenance on your heating/cooling equipment it will bring you many benefits.  Such as prolonged equipment life, peace of mind and the equipment will be more energy efficient.

As much as people think “well, the unit is running fine right now” that might not be the case.  Just because the unit is running to a consumers satisfaction does not mean the unit is running at full capacity.  By having preventative maintenance done regularly you can determine at a much earlier time when repairs are needed.

Think of your equipment as a car.  Your car might be running fine but without regular tune-ups you could cause your car to have major problems.  You have to get your oil changed regularly, have your brakes checked and many other tune-up requirements done to keep your car in mint condition.  The same goes for your heating/cooling system the better you take care of your equipment the longer it will last with better efficiency.

Its a little know fact, that most systems in Phoenix, AZ are heat pumps.  A heat pump in the heating mode is a air conditioner running backwards.  Your are actually air conditioning the air outside.  All manufactures ship heat pumps to Arizona without secondary strip heat installed.  Any where else in the country they come with factory installed strip heaters.  This is due to the fact that we very rarely have temperatures below 35 degrees.  Most builders in Arizona don’t install the larger wire size needed for the extra amperage needed to run the auxiliary strip heat.  When the temperature drops below 40 degrees in the valley if your systems refrigerant charge is not exactly right your outdoor unit will freeze up or defrost more times than necessary.  When a heat pump goes into defrost mode it blows cold air into your house.  When it comes out of defrost mode it has to reheat the house back up this causes extremely long run cycles.  Which increases your energy consumption substantially.

Having a thorough maintenance done in the Fall by a qualified contractor will assure proper system operation in the colder months.

Arizona Public Service is offering cash rebates of up to $250.00 to test and seal your ductwork.

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

APS will pay you up to $250.00 per system to have your ducts tested and sealed to help reduce leakage.

Air Condotioning by Jays Comfort Team is one of the few contractors who hold the required BPI certification to qualify you for the APS duct testing and sealing program. If you are like most home owners in Arizona, as long as your heating and cooling system is keeping you comfortable, you dont give it much thought. But what you dont see could be costing you hundreds of dollars every year. Most duct sytems in Arizona are installed in attics or building cavities where they are hidden from view and rarely inspected.

The results of a recent APS study found:

As much of 33% of a heating/cooling systems capacity could be leaking through ducts causing loss of comfort, decreased capacity and longer run cycles.

In Arizona’s climate, on average, 50% of your annual energy bill is spent running your heating and cooling system.

On average in Arizona, 15% of heating and cooling capacity is lost due to duct leakage.

The impact of duct leakage is most severe in duct sytems installed in attics where tempatures can reach 140 degrees or more in the summer months. Most homes in Arizona have attic ductwork.

Fixing duct leaks can save you more than $200.00 in your annual energy cost while improving the comfort and air quality in your home.

Most repairs to ducts are relatively easy to perform and not very expensive, especially when APS is offering rebates up to $250.00 per system. All homes are different and Air Conditioning by Jays Comfort Team is qualified and well trained to evaluate your home and offer realistic repairs that are beneficial to your energy consumption, your equipment lifespan and the air quality in your home. For more information on this program visit www.dialcomfort.com or http://www.aps.com/main/green/choice/choice_18.html?source=acjump

Is a New Arizona Air Conditioner the Best Investment You Can Make This Summer?

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Did you know that during the hot summer months, Arizona air conditioners make up almost 50% of most peoples’ energy costs? For many people that means bills of $200, $300, or even more each and every month just for air conditioning!

And if you haven’t already heard, the Energy Information Administration recently predicted a 3.7% increase in residential electricity prices this year. That means that it is becoming more expensive than ever to keep cool during the blistering hot summer with your Arizona air conditioning.

Luckily there is a solution. New, long lasting air conditioners are much more energy efficient then their older predecessors and many offer energy savings of up to 60%!

That means that if you are currently paying $200 to cool your home, switching to a new air conditioner could save you up to $120 every summer month for years to come. Not to mention the many rebates offered for buying a new air conditioner (an average $1,200 savings).

If you want to figure out how much you could save during the summer months, take a look at your energy bills during the past 12 months. First add the total of all twelve statements and save that number. Next pick your lowest annual utility bill and take that amount times 12. Finally subtract the smaller number from the larger total and you will have an amount that is very close to the annual cost of operating your home comfort system.

When you combine a new high SEER air conditioning system with duct work modifications, you can reduce your annual cost of operating your home comfort system by over 60%. For Example an 1800 square foot home with a total annual electrical usage expense of 2600.00 that has a lowest annual March utility bill of $120.00 benchmarked times twelve would total $1440.00. 2600.00 minus 1440.00 = $1160.00, $1160.00 x 60% =$695.00 less in annual operational expenses. Not bad.

Buying a new air conditioner in Arizona might seem expensive, but after you consider your monthly savings and the rebates offered, your purchase might be the best investment you make for years.

If you need help choosing the right Arizona air conditioner hat will keep your home cool and get you all of the best rebates, call Air Conditioning by Jay. We have helped over 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area with their air conditioning needs and we can help you too.

Benefits of regular precision tune ups on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

The benefits of routine precision tune ups on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system pay you dividends everyday

The benefits of regular Precision Tune Up’s on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system can give you tangible returns of added equipment life, lower monthly energy bills, and fewer repair costs. Phoenix air conditioning and heating systems need regular maintenance check ups to keep it running at the designed efficiency levels throughout its life. Things as simple as a dirty condenser coil will cause your compressor to work at higher pressures, which mean it will draws more amperage, and will eventually fail.

You pay the electric company for the amps you use so every month your electric bill is higher and you will need a new compressor sooner than you would have had if you would have maintained your system properly. The benefits of proper maintenance on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system far outweigh the costs associated with neglecting your system. More information about your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system can be found @ www.dialcomfort.com

Phoenix Air conditioning & Heating Service Agreements

Most Phoenix air conditioning and heating contractors offer preventative maintenance plans where they will automatically conduct a Precision Tune Up on your system on a regular basis. The benefits of this type of plan are two fold. First, your system is cleaned and checked by a trained HVAC professional who is aware of the most common problems that can occur with your specific type of equipment. in Phoenixes harsh summer environment.

The Precision Tune Up on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system should include checking the indoor and outdoor coils for cleanliness, checking the filter, checking your duct system for leakage, checking the condensate line for proper drainage, using gauges and thermometers to assure the proper refrigerant charge and temperature split across the coils. These checks are the basic checks that should be done on your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system. A truly well trained technician should also use specialty tools to check things such as the amp draws of all electrical components, the proper condition of all run and start capacitors, check and tighten all electrical connections, meg ohm the compressor windings, and use of air flow tools to determine if your system is moving the proper amount of air across the indoor coil.

All of these things, if checked by a competent HVAC professional should give you piece of mind that your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system will not break down when you need it the most, that you are maximizing your energy consumption, and that you will get the most life from your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system. Other benefits include discounts on repairs, priority service in the event of a breakdown, and reduced overtime rates if you do have a problem after normal business hours.

Save Money on Your Arizona Air Conditioner by Preventing Heat Gain

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Over 50% of the heat gain into your home comes through your windows. Are you doing what you can to stop the heat?

The more heat that enters your home, the harder your Arizona air conditioner has to work to keep you cool this summer. By preventing heat gain, you can stay comfortable while saving money on your Arizona air conditioning bill.

Heat gain comes from a number of areas including walls, doors, ceilings and most importantly windows. Windows account for almost 50% of the heat gain that your home experiences each year. Many seek to combat this heat gain by installing new specially designed windows, however these are expensive and take a number years to recover the investment. Here are five ways you can stick with the windows you have while fighting heat gain.

  • Check your windows for cracks or issues with caulking. Fix or replace if necessary.
  • Install shade screens on windows and regularly inspect them for rips or tears.
  • Use trees and shrubs to provide shade for your house. Deciduous trees are a popular choice because they provide shade during the summer, and shed their leaves during the winder for more sunlight.
  • Use reflective window films to block out the sun. When buying these films, look for a heat gain coefficient of .40 or less.
  • Install awnings over the windows.

By following these easy steps, you can stay cool for less without having to overwork your Arizona air conditioner.

The History of Air Conditioning

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

A short history of the Air Conditioner and how it shaped Arizona.

Air conditioning in Arizona allowed what was once a desert wasteland to become a thriving metropolis and ever popular vacation destination. Without the help of air conditioners, Arizonans would never have been able to withstand such harsh summer heat and create the expansive city we see before us today.

The first attempt at air conditioning was made in the 1830s by Dr. John Gorrie in Apalachicola, Florida to cool down hospital patients.  It worked by blowing air over a bucket of ice and was used for malaria and yellow fever patients.

Over 50 years later, in 1881 a similar device was created for keeping dying president James Garfield cool and comfortable. This contraption kept the room over 20 degrees cooler, but at the expense of nearly a half million pounds of ice in two months.

By 1902, the first device that resembles a modern air conditioner was created by Willis Carrier, whose company still continues to make high quality air conditioners to this day. The machine cooled air and lowered humidity by using chilled coils.

After the first air conditioner was created, sales took off as many companies looked to purchase them for their industrial buildings and offices. The first home air conditioner was sold in 1914 to Charles Gates in Minneapolis. Unfortunately, the first models were incredibly large, expensive and highly toxic, so there was a lot of room for improvement.

Carrier continued to be an innovator by finding ways to replace the toxic chemicals as well as significantly reducing the size of the unit. Additionally, deals were made with movie theaters in 1925 which dramatically increased the popularity of the device.

After world war two finished, sales shot up dramatically with over one million units sold in 1953.
Air conditioners have continued to advance significantly as the years have passed, and have allowed millions to move to hotter states such as Arizona.

Air Conditioning by Jay can you help you keep cool this summer without a half million pounds of ice. We offer a wide variety of Arizona air conditioners and are sure to have one that meets your needs. Contact us today by using our privacy assured online form or call 602-266-3678

Want to Know How Much a Home’s Energy Costs in Arizona Are?

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Whether you are thinking about moving and wondering how much you will pay for energy in your new home, or you’re simply curious, about what you can expect to bay for energy this year, we have your answer. Thanks to some handy tools by SRP and APS, anyone can quickly assess an Arizona home to discover their average expected monthly energy bill.

The first tool by APS is a simple application that only requires you to input the address you are interested in. If that address is an APS customer, it will provide you with the average bill amount during the last 12 months rounded to the nearest $5. Access this tool here.

SRP’s energy usage tool is more complicated, however it is quite useful if you don’t know a particular address or if you are not an APS customer. It is also incredibly useful for seeing how changes to your energy usage and appliances can significantly change your bill.

To start, go to SRP’s Home Energy Calculator and describe your home by answering a number of questions about the features and appliances your home contains. Then click the “calculate base house energy use” button.

The program will then come back with a ton of data projecting how much each appliance will cost you yearly and monthly, as well as a total overall cost projection.

Does Size Matter in Arizona Air Conditioning?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

With the push towards high efficiency air conditioners in Arizona, many top brands have beefed up the size of their units in order to inexpensively meet the demands required. Obviously, larger units mean bigger space requirements. Unfortunately, many find that there is never enough space to fit a large unit and are left to wonder how they can have a new Arizona air conditioner installed in their home.

Fortunately, there are some solutions. Thanks to new technologies, some of the top air condition manufacturers have developed significantly smaller units that are still incredibly efficient. These mini units are an excellent buy for someone looking to save space while still staying cool all summer long.

Here are some of the top picks for small air conditioners with huge cooling power.

York Latitude TCGD Series 13 SEER Air Conditioner

With a 13 SEER rating and an incredibly small footprint, the York Latitude is an excellent option for anywhere that size is an issue. This Arizona air conditioner can easily fit where most cannot yet it still offers the cooling power and efficiency of much larger models.

Other features of the unit include the much more environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant, an all-aluminum MicroChannel coil with corrosion protection, a maintenance free fan, and a five-year parts and compressor warranty.

Carrier Performance Series Side Discharge Horizontal Air Conditioner

The Carrier Performance Series offers an ultra compact unit that can fit almost anywhere, but still offers major power and a 15 SEER rating. Additionally, the unit is incredibly quite at as low as 66 decibels. The refrigerant used is called Puron and is considered to be environmentally sound.

The Air Conditioner is also highly durable and weather resistant. A five-year parts and ten-year compressor warranty comes with every unit. Because of its design, it can be installed a near as six inches from a house and can also be placed on a roof or deck.

If you need help selecting the right low footprint air conditioner in Arizona, Air Conditioning by Jay can help. We offer a wide variety of air conditioners and are sure to have one that meets your needs

What to Look For In an Environmentally Friendly Arizona Air Conditioner

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

With increasing concern about global warming, greenhouse gasses, and pollution, more people than ever have look towards more environmentally friendly and “green” options for keeping their home cool this summer with an Arizona air conditioner.

By considering a few very important options when choosing a new Arizona air conditioner, you can reduce your carbon footprint, avoid toxic chemicals, and save a whole lot of money thanks to reduced cooling costs.

If you have followed this blog for any amount of time, you’ll know that choosing an A/C unit with a high SEER rating is essential for energy conservation. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the rating, the more efficiently the air conditioner operates. An efficient air conditioner means that not only will you have lower cooling costs, but you also be helping the environment by using less energy.

Currently SEER ratings are required to be at 13 or higher, but chances are that if you have an older unit it has a SEER rating much lower than 13. In fact, modern Arizona air conditioners are up to 60% more efficient then older models. Replacing your old air conditioner is a great way to save money and go green.

Another very important issue to consider when purchasing an air conditioner in Arizona is the type of refrigerant used in your system. We’ve written previously about the EPA mandated phase out of the R-22 refrigerant and its replacement with the R-410A refrigerant. The EPA determined that the older R-22 chemical could be toxic and likely depleted the ozone layer.
Fortunately, scientists have discovered that the R-410A chemical caused no such problem and many have begun to purchase air conditioners with the new refrigerant. Using it is certainly the environmentally friendly option and it will also save money in the long run thanks to the expected price increase in R-22.

The final issue to consider when looking for an environmentally friendly Arizona air conditioner is the qualifications of the technician that installs the unit. Ultimately buying the best system in the world is pointless unless it is selected and installed correctly. Make sure that your technician is trusted and qualified to install air conditioners with the R-410A refrigerant.

Air Conditioning by Jay has helped homes and businesses all around Arizona install environmentally friendly air conditioners since 1983. Our technicians are master certified and have top level certifications from SRP, HPC, NATE, BEI, as well as most systems manufacturers. Contact us today by using our privacy assured online form or call 602-266-3678.

Find the Latest Rebates for Your Arizona Air Conditioner

Monday, July 28th, 2008

How to find the latest and greatest rebates to save you a ton when buying a new air conditioner in Arizona.

During the exceedingly hot Arizona summers, having a working air conditioner in your home ranks just behind food and shelter as the most important part of your continued survival. Without a working air conditioner in Arizona many people are forced to leave their homes and take refuge in better cooled places until it is bearable to return late at night when the temperature is slightly lower. As anyone who has needed to have their Arizona air conditioner repaired will tell you, this is far from an ideal or comfortable situation to be in for any amount of time.

If you are worried that your older air conditioner might break during a week of 115 degree days or you are simply interested in the energy savings and increased comfort that a new high efficiency air conditioner in Arizona provides, then it might be time to do some research. Many people who are shopping for a new unit find that no matter where they look, the price of a new unit is very expensive. However, they don’t realize that with the large savings they will have on their energy bill, the increased comfort they will gain, and the decreased harm to the environment, the unit is actually a far more affordable investment then they think.

Of course choosing to invest in an Arizona air conditioner is still a big purchase, but thanks to a variety of rebates from a number of sources, your air conditioner might end up costing you a lot less than you thought, even before the energy savings begin.

In Arizona, the utility companies APS and SRP both offer excellent rebates for anyone looking to purchase a new high efficiency system. Additionally, there are many tax incentives and rebates from all levels of government as well as a number of private organizations looking to encourage more energy efficient homes.

For an excellent way of finding many of the rebates you are eligible for, check out this rebate calculator.

How to Zone Your Home for Top Arizona Air Conditioner Results

Monday, July 28th, 2008

An explanation of zoning systems and how they increase your comfort while saving you a ton on Arizona air conditioning bills.

As we all know, no two people are the same. Some people are tall, some short, some people want the temperature of their Arizona air conditioner set at 80 degrees, and others find 72 degrees to be optimal. Unfortunately, those people often live in the same house and many are often forced to compromise on a temperature that leaves nobody completely satisfied.

Fortunately, today’s technology allows everyone to be happy and all the while save a bunch of money on cooling costs. Using a system of dampers in the ductwork, zones of the house are created and each is controlled by its own thermostat. Zones can be segmented by upstairs and downstairs, by living area and sleeping area, or even individually room by room. Additionally if you have a home office, you can keep that cool without needing to cool the rest of the house that is left empty for much of the day.

The benefits of a zoning system are numerous and will make everyone in your family more comfortable while costing you less money. Since each room can set its own temperature, everyone in the house can be in their ideal comfort zone at all times.

Additionally, using a zoning system allows you to only use your Arizona air conditioner where it is needed. For instance during the day time, it is generally unnecessary to keep bedrooms cool as there will likely be nobody in them. By using a zoning system, no air will be used to cool unused rooms, thus saving you huge amounts on your energy bill.

If you are interested in using a zoning system with your Arizona air conditioner, Air Conditioning by Jay can help. Contact us today by using our privacy assured online form or call 602-266-3678.

Your Air Ducts May Be Costing You A Lot of Money on Your Air Conditioning in Arizona

Friday, July 25th, 2008

An explanation of common air duct problems and why fixing them can save you a bundle on energy costs.

Did you know that in the typical home 20 to 40 percent of the cold air that moves through a duct system is lost thanks to broken, damaged, or incorrectly installed parts. This means that a large percentage of your energy bill could be going towards cooling completely unused portions of your house such as crawl spaces or the attic. Additionally, this leaky system means that you will have a harder time staying cool with your air conditioner in Arizona during this particularly hot summer.

Here are the most common duct work problems according to studies performed by APS, National Comfort Institute (NCI) and the Arizona air conditioner repair experts on the Air Conditioning by Jay Comfort Team.

  1. Leaks at the connection with the ducts
  2. Return air duct leaks
  3. Furniture is blocking the air duct register
  4. There are leaks at the equipment and filter slots
  5. Insulation has fallen off of duct work in attics and crawl spaces
  6. Supply air duct leaks
  7. Kinks in duct work or improper installation which restricts the airflow

The more leaks and kinks your home develops, the harder time your Arizona air conditioner will have cooling your home. An inefficient duct system will make your home less comfortable and will cost you a lot of extra money on your energy bill.

A highly trained Arizona air conditioning repair technician can quickly identify the problem areas within your home and replace or repair all of the damaged, disconnected, and undersized ducts which make up the bulk of the problem. Your technician should also seal any leaks and all registers and grills, replace filters, insulate ducts, and conduct safety tests as part of the repair work.

If you need help with your duct work or any other Arizona air conditioner repair problems contact Air Conditioning by Jay. Find out why we are trusted by more than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area by visiting our website or calling us at 602-266-3678 today.

Is Your Arizona Air Conditioner Giving You Problem Warning Signs?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

A guide to common warning signs that mean it is time to replace your Arizona air conditioner.

As anyone who has ever needed their Arizona air conditioner repaired during the hot summer months will tell you, a broken air conditioner will make you completely miserable. Many people actually have to leave their homes and stay with a friend or at a hotel just to avoid the heat while their air conditioner in Arizona is repaired or replaced.

While there is no 100% forecast for when your old air conditioner will sputter out and die, there are some warning signs. By paying attention to these signs, you can take action before you are forced out of your home and into a hotel room.

Warning Sign #1: Your Unit is Over 10 Years Old. If your Arizona air conditioner is over ten years old, it stands a far greater risk of malfunctioning then a newer unit. By switching to a newer system, you will save over 20% on your energy bill, reduce greenhouse gas, and ensure that you stay cool this summer.

Warning Sign #2: Increased Need for Arizona Air Conditioner Repairs. Even if fixing minor problems is not costing you very much, if your unit needs “semi-frequent” repairs it could be reaching the end of its lifespan.

Warning Sign #3: Energy Costs Shoot Up. Higher energy costs could mean that the system has started to operate less efficiently and might need to be replaced soon to avoid astronomical cooling bills.

Warning Sign #4: Rooms Stay too Hot or Get too Cold. This might be a sign that the system is starting to malfunction. It could also mean you have ductwork/airflow problems or inadequate insulation.

Warning Sign #5: Your Home Gets Dusty. Excessive dust is often caused by leaky ducts that pull particles from attics, basements, and even outside!

Warning Sign #6: Your Arizona Air Conditioner Gets Noisy. Increased noisiness could be caused by an inadequately sized duct system or a malfunctioning indoor coil. Also, newer systems are almost all much quieter then their older counterparts.

If you have started to notice any of these warning signs, it might be time to replace your Arizona air conditioner before it breaks when you need it most.

Air Conditioning by Jay can help you select and install the right air conditioner for you, quickly and affordably. Contact us today using our privacy assured online form or call 602-266-3678.

Calculate Your SEER Energy Efficiency Savings for a New Arizona Air Conditioner

Monday, July 21st, 2008

How to choose the right air conditioner that will save you money and keep you comfortable using a simple online calculator.

Buying a high energy efficiency air conditioner in Arizona can seem like an expensive proposal. When the price difference between a 13 SEER system and a 21 SEER system can be quite substantial, many people are left to wonder if the better system is really worth it. Despite the fact that Arizona air conditioning uses a huge percentage of the energy consumed during the summer months, many are unsure that the energy savings justify purchasing the higher rated system.

Thanks to a new cooling calculator, people looking to buy a new system can now see approximately how much they will save or spend depending on which system they buy. Armed with this information, anyone can be confident that they are buying the right system to keep them cool while saving both money and energy.

Use the cooling calculator to compare Arizona air conditioners and find the one that will save you money and keep you cool all summer long.

To use this calculator you will need some basic information about the units you want to compare including the SEER rating, the cooling capacity, the cost of the unit, and whether you will use a programmable thermostat. You can get this information from your technician or you can find most of it at the manufacturer’s website.

Keep in mind that this calculator is based off of average use and may be different depending on your circumstances.

Air Conditioning by Jay can help you choose the right Arizona air conditioner for your home or business. We offer a wide selection of units from all of the most reliable brands. Find out why we are trusted by more than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area by visiting our website or calling us at 602-266-3678 today.

Protect Your Family from the Flu with Trane CleanEffects System

Friday, July 18th, 2008

A profile of the new Trane CleanEffects filter system and how it can protect your family from the flu and other airborne health problems.

According to new research by the Harvard School of Public Health, in collaboration with scientists at Environmental Health and Engineering Inc., a Trane CleanEffects system removes over 99% of the common flu, or influenza A virus, from a standard home’s filtered air. This reduced concentration of the virus means that you and your family are much less likely to catch the virus within your home then if you were not using the system.

Additionally, the system asserts to remove 99.98% of airborne particles and allergens from your home’s filtered air, a figure higher than any other system on the market.

Whole house air filtration systems have become increasingly popular thanks to the additional health benefits of breathing cleaner air. Asthma and allergy sufferers report considerable relief from using air filters such as the Trane CleanEffects system. Because the unit keeps such a high percentage of allergens from ever entering the air you breath, allergy suffers can gain much needed relief anywhere in their home.

The use of a whole house air filter like the CleanEffects system means that air circulating throughout the house is kept clean from most airborne particles. This is a huge improvement over single room air purifiers that only operate within a small radius and are far less effective at catching most particles. Further, the system attaches directly to your Arizona air conditioner so there is no extra appliances laying around to trip you up or get damaged.

If you are interested in attaching a Trane CleanEffects system to your Arizona air conditioner, Trane master certified dealer Air Conditioning by Jay can help. Contact us today by using our privacy assured online form or by calling 602-266-3678.

Why You Need a Surge Protector to Protect Your Arizona Air Conditioner

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Why you need the right surge protector to prevent your Arizona air conditioner from frying.

Monsoon season is upon us in Arizona and that means it’s time for buckets of rain, huge lightning storms, and a whole bunch of people getting their cars stuck in washes.

One thing you might not be thinking about this monsoon season is power surges and what they can do to your air conditioner in Arizona. The Air Conditioning by Jay Comfort Team Technicians see it all the time, power surges causing whole Arizona air conditioning systems to get zapped because they weren’t protected properly.

In most homes you’ll find surge protectors on computers and home entertainment equipment to protect these appliances from the many power surges they see. When comparing these appliances to your homes Arizona air conditioning system it is amazing to see how few are actually protected.

Without the proper protection a power surge in your house can cause your air conditioner to break beyond repair leaving you to pay thousands for a new unit.

While lightning is the most obvious source of a power surge, it is not the only culprit. Utility events, cycling of air conditioners, generators, motors and appliances can also produce damaging surges. This means that even once the monsoons end you could be still at risk.
Fortunately, certain surge protectors have been created specifically to protect your Arizona air conditioner. Choosing the right surge protector allows you to relax knowing that you will not be weighed down with an expensive new installation bill because of a power surge at your home or business.

Air conditioning by Jay knows how important selecting the right surge protector is and will help you find the one that works best for your system. To learn more, visit our website or call us at 602-266-3678 today.

Protect Your Home Against Moisture Damage

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Why moisture damage might cost you thousands of dollars in repairs and how to prevent it.

Contrary to the popular saying “it’s a dry heat”, Arizona residents are about to see humidity levels rise and rain fall by the bucket load as monsoon season kicks into full gear. Unfortunately, those high levels of humidity bring something that Arizona air conditioners don’t handle very well, moisture removal that can sometimes result in damage to your home.

With rising humidity levels, condensation systems (drains) begin to fail and leaks begin to develop. What starts as a slow drip from your ceiling or wet carpeting in your hallway quickly expands into an expensive problem. Moisture damage can ruin your flooring, destroy your drywall, and cause you to replace the insulation throughout your home. Damages caused by moisture in Arizona have been known to cost thousands of dollars and countless hassles to fix; so much for a dry heat.

Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your home against moisture damage. The most effective method that is recommended by most HVAC professionals is installing a condensate EZ trap with an electronic drain safety switch onto your existing Arizona air conditioning system.

An EZ Trap Drain Safety Switch will monitor the condition of your existing drain system to ensure water is not backing up or going where it isn’t supposed to be. This means you can rest easy without having to worry about moisture damage costing you thousands in home repairs.

For more information about moisture traps or for questions about any other Arizona air conditioning repair or installation service, contact us online or call us at 602-266-3678.

The Causes and Effects of Poor Arizona Air Conditioner Installation

Friday, July 11th, 2008

The facts about “bargain” contractors and how to stop them from incorrectly installing your air conditioner in Arizona.

Of the 7.1 million air conditioners installed in 2006, 60 percent of them were replacements for existing units. Many of the over 4.26 million replacements were for units that broke during peak usage, which as we know from our Arizona air conditioning experiences means 115 degree heat.

Obviously as a home owner your first instinct after your unit breaks is to call around or search the web to find an air conditioning company that can get to you that same day. If your system is more than 10 years old you may elect to have a new high efficiency air conditioning system installed. Unfortunately, this urgency to have a new unit installed quickly tempts many air conditioning companies to focus more on a quick turnaround then a quality installation. And, because a good technician is more expensive to hire and harder to find, these hasty contractors often hire poorly trained, unlicensed, or unqualified people to install air conditioners in Arizona.

This savings to them might mean you are offered prices and performance promises that are simply unreasonable. Unfortunately, these savings are short lived to the many people who are duped by these “bargain” companies. As these unfortunate home owners quickly find, incorrectly installed units will skyrocket their energy costs. They also require much more to repair and maintain over the life of the unit then a well installed Arizona air conditioner.

It is also because of these poorly installed units that Arizona Public Service has found the average Arizona air conditioning unit is operating at only 60 to 65 percent of designed capacity. This eliminates many of the savings involved with buying a better system.

Be absolutely certain that whoever you choose to install your air conditioner in Arizona is completely qualified to install your unit correctly and expediently.

Air Conditioning by Jay adheres to the highest standards when they install your new energy saving Arizona air conditioning unit. Our Comfort Team technicians are highly trained and certified to provide you with a top quality system installation. To learn more, visit our website or call us at 602-266-3678 today.

How to Get a Quality Installation for Your Air Conditioner in Arizona

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Understanding the Quality Installation Standard and why you need it to select the right Arizona air conditioning contractor.

Choosing the right contractor to install your new air conditioner in Arizona is a decision that could end up costing you a lot more money if you don’t find the right people for the job. An incorrect installation can cause even the best system to break more easily, require more maintenance, and use much more energy than it actually needs. In fact, a top of the line 19 SEER system will be no more energy efficient then an inexpensive 13 SEER system if installed incorrectly.

So how can you find a contractor that you know will provide a high quality installation using just the right system to keep you cool and your energy bill low? The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) think they have an answer.

The Quality Installation (QI) Standard was introduced last year as a way to guarantee that your Arizona air conditioner installation met top standards that promote both comfort and energy savings. Already these QI standards have been embraced by both local and federal governments as well as utility companies.

It is expected that additional rebates will be offered by utility companies to consumers as a way to encourage using a contractor who follows the QI standards in the near future.

By choosing a QI contractor, you can expect an installation that adheres to the best industry practices for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. Additionally, a properly installed air conditioner will require fewer repairs and even extend the life of the unit significantly.

Air Conditioning by Jay is proud to have incorporated much of the Quality Installation Standard with all new air conditioning systems we install. We are known for our consistent record of high quality Arizona air conditioner installations. To find out why we are trusted by more than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Phoenix, Arizona area, visit our website or call us at 602-266-3678 today.

Carrier Introduces a Smarter Control for Your Arizona Air Conditioner

Monday, July 7th, 2008

A profile of the new Carrier Infinity Control and its benefits for air conditioners in Arizona

As anyone who has ever used a television knows, remote controls aren’t easy to use.  There is one for the volume, one for changing the channels and yet another for playing movies.  And even worse, each control has so many buttons that you have to be some kind of genius to figure them all out.

Just like television remote controls, air conditioner controls are often just as hard to figure out.  To make matters worse, controls for air conditioners in Arizona are used much less often than ones for the TV and are therefore less well known and harder to figure out.

The folks at Carrier realized this was a problem and so they have installed the Infinity Control in their new line of Infinity System air conditioners. The Infinity Control allows for longer heating and cooling cycles at lower fan speeds to save energy and keep temperatures more consistent throughout the home.

Additionally, the control panel is a large, easy to read digital display with a backlight and it can be used to control all six comfort features of the system: temperature, humidity, airflow, ventilation, IAQ, and zoning.

The Infinity Control will also let you know when your system needs maintenance or when your filters need to be changed. This allows you to take the guess work out of keeping your system running perfectly.

For more information about Carrier Air Conditioners or to have an Arizona air conditioning unit installed in your home, contact Arizona’s Air Conditioning by Jay online or call valley wide 602-266-3678.

Is It Time to Replace Your Arizona Air Conditioning Unit?

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Not sure if you are ready to take the plunge and invest in a new air conditioning system? Here are some considerations to think about when you are making this difficult decision. Remember, most Arizona air conditioners last for 12 to 15 years with proper installation and maintenance.

  • New air conditioning systems last longer then ever and provide increased energy efficiency.
  • The entire system must be replaced. The two parts of the system, the indoor coil and the outdoor condensing unit, were once capable of being mixed and matched but due to the high technology, high efficiency units, both parts must now integrate perfectly.
  • Your system needs to be the right size for your home. This is very important because a small system will not keep you cool while a large system will be inefficient and cost you more in energy bills.
  • Your house’s power source might need upgrading. If you are living in an older home it might only contain 110-volt, 60-amp service which is probably only capable of handling the electricity requirements you already have. Adding air conditioning in Arizona to your home might require you to upgrade your electrical output to a dedicated 230-volt circuit with between 20 and 50 amps of power.
  • Know your new systems SEER rating. SEER is a measure of how energy efficient you air conditioner is. The government mandates that all new systems be rated at 13 or higher. The higher the SEER rating is the better, but higher SEER also means higher prices.
  • Make sure the air conditioning system is properly matched. Ask the technician for an ARI Reference Number. Enter the number into ARI’s Directory of Certified Product Performance and it will verify that the match is correct and provide you with a certificate. For highly efficient systems you might be able use this certificate to obtain a tax credit.
  • Know how quiet you need your air conditioner to be. Most Arizonans are used to the constant sound of air conditioning and new units are far quieter then their older counterparts but there are still differences. If you are looking for even quieter performance parts, insulated compressor compartments, discharge mufflers and new fan designs might be worth your money. All ARI rated Air Conditioners have decibel ratings. Better systems are rated in the low to mid 70’s range. The lower the rating the quieter your system will be. If quiet Air Conditioning is important to you remember to compare decibel ratings.

Purchasing a new air conditioner in Arizona doesn’t need to be difficult. Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team technicians can help you choose exactly what you need and match you with the right air conditioning system. Maintaining Your Arizona Air Conditioner the Right Way

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Want to get the most out of your air conditioner in Arizona? Here are some steps you can take to keep your AC running smoothly and effectively.

  • Change the air filter regularly. Dirty air filters will keep air from flowing correctly and by keeping your filter clean; you can save between 5 and 15 percent on energy usage. Be sure to follow all manufacturer recommendations and turn the system off while changing the filter.
  • Do not block your inside air condition vents with furniture. Vents need to be unobstructed so that the air can circulate freely.
  • Keep the outdoor condensing unit clean. This large box in your yard should be kept clean from plants, grass, leaves or anything else which might block its airflow and reduce efficiency. You should also clean the unit off from time to time with a hose.
  • Close vents in unused rooms and keep doors to those rooms closed.
  • Keep the fan speed on high. Unless Arizona starts to get humid, a high fan speed is best to keep your house at the perfect temperature.
  • Hire a professional certified Arizona air conditioner repair specialist. Problems with your system are best fixed by trained professionals who know exactly what needs to be done to maximize efficiency.

Air Conditioning by Jay maintains thousands of air conditioners in Arizona. Learn more or contact us today by going to www.DialComfort.com or calling 602-266-3678

5 Steps for Saving Energy with Your Air Conditioning in Arizona

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

As we enter these hot summer months, air conditioning in Arizona is going into overtime and people who are not prepared are going to see their energy bills shoot through the roof. In fact the Department of Energy estimates that heating and cooling accounts for almost half of a homes energy use. In Arizona it’s typically even more!

Fortunately there is hope for those of us who are looking to save some money this year. Here are five steps that you can follow to save energy with your Arizona air conditioner.

  1. Regularly Maintain Your Equipment: Having annual maintenance on your air conditioner ensures that it operates in tip top shape. This will help keep energy efficiency high and your system lasting longer.
  2. Seal and insulate your house: Seal off air ducts leading to non air conditioned places like garages and attics. Be sure to use either mastic or foil-backed tape. Once you have sealed off leaky ducts, wrap them with insulation to keep the cold air going exactly where you want it to.
  3. Buy a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature of the house automatically. When you are gone at work you can save energy by having the air conditioning automatically switched off until right before coming home when it can automatically switch back on. The EPA estimates that if properly used, this type of thermostat can save over $150 a year.
  4. Replace your old air conditioner: If you have an old AC unit, you might be spending far more then you should on energy costs. New air conditioners are far more energy efficient then older models. You can compare models by looking at their SEER rating (the higher the better).
  5. Use a qualified Arizona air conditioning technician: Using a certified professional ensures that your air conditioning system will be the right one for your needs. He or she will properly match, size and install you system to the correct specifications. Proper installation ensures that you will get the maximum energy efficiency out of your new Arizona air conditioner.

Find out why Air Conditioning by Jay is the contractor of choice for over 30,000 Arizona homes and businesses. Go to www.DialComfort.com or call Valley wide at 602-266-3678 to schedule an appointment today.

Ten Top Tips for Saving Money on Your Arizona Air Conditioning Bill

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

With gas prices at record highs and the economy in a little bit of a slump everyone is trying to save some money anywhere they can. As anyone with an air conditioner in Arizona knows, keeping your home cool during these hot summer months can be expensive. However there are ways to dramatically decrease your energy bill this summer.

Here are ten easy and inexpensive ways you can save big on your energy bill this summer.

  1. Set your thermostat a little higher. Setting the temperature just a few degrees warmer can equal big savings on your energy bills. Particularly when you are leaving the house for a few hours, setting the thermostat to 85 or 90 means that you don’t have to pay a lot extra to cool an empty home.

  2. Use a fan. Fans can make a room feel four to six degrees cooler and cost just pennies an hour to operate. Using a fan in conjunction with your Arizona air conditioner can equal big savings and increased comfort.

  3. Use the cool outside air. As the sun goes down, the air starts to cool down so why not use it to keep your house comfortable? Once the air cools, open the windows and bring in the cool air with window fans. Then, as the sun rises and things heat up, close the windows and the curtains to hold the cooler air inside.

  4. Block out the sun. Shading your windows with curtains or blinds during the day can reduce heat gain inside your house by up to 20 percent. Be sure that any window that is exposed to direct sunlight is protected from those hot Arizona rays.

  5. Use a programmable thermostat. Digital thermostats can save a lot of energy by setting the AC around your schedule. Why use precious energy to cool a house that you are not in?

  6. Consider other sources of heat. Did you know that using an oven raises the temperature of the room by 10 degrees? Try to do your baking, your laundry and any other chore that requires heat during the cooler hours of the night.

  7. Change your lighting. Switching from incandescent bulbs to newer fluorescent lights is a real two for one deal. Not only will you spend 75 percent less in lighting your home year round, but the 90 percent less heat emissions means lower Arizona air conditioning bills.

  8. Fix the ducts. Leaky air ducts can cause your air conditioner to become far less efficient. Hire a qualified Arizona air conditioning repair technician to fix any leaks and save up to 40 percent on your energy bill.

  9. Seal the leaks. Small cracks in your house could be letting in warm air without you even knowing it. Vents, ducts, doors, windows and electrical conduits can all contain little cracks that are allowing hot air to come freely into your home.

  10. Get rid of the heat in you attic. Attics get up to 150 degrees during the summer months and will cause your entire house to feel warmer. To fix this problem make sure your attic is well insulated with no less then 12 inches of fiberglass or cellulose.

Maintaining Evaporative Coolers

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Evaporative coolers, also called swamp coolers, have been touted as the energy efficient alternative to regular air conditioners in Arizona. Estimated to use up to 75% less electricity then regular air conditioning units, swamp coolers are able to lower the temperature of a room by up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

While they do boast some advantages over traditional Arizona air conditioning units there is some extra work which swamp cooler owners must do to prevent and repair some common problems.

  • Water leakage: Generally caused by improper storage. Before parking your swamp cooler for the winter or monsoon seasons, it should be drained, cleaned and the pads should be routinely cleaned or replaced.

  • Strange odors: Odors are caused by sitting or stagnant water or pads that need to be replaced. Be sure to replace the pads and clean the swamp cooler on a regular basis.

  • Not providing enough cooling: Swamp coolers only work in dry climates (like Arizona!) otherwise they will only serve to add to the humidity. Also ensure airflow by opening doors and windows as well as checking pads for dry spots or clogs.

  • Unit does not work: Check for broken fuses and tripped breakers. If this does not work the problem is best left to an experienced repair professional.

  • Remember the Arizona Monsoon season generally is the time to switch from your cooler back to traditional air conditioning as the more humid conditions reduce evaporative coolers effectiveness.

Using a Programmable Thermostat with your Arizona Air Conditioner

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Did you know that modern programmable thermostats can save you up to 20 percent on energy costs compared to older models? By automatically raising and lowering the temperature to accommodate your daily routine these digital wonders set the right tune for saving money with your Air Conditioner in Arizona.

With a 20 percent savings on energy costs, buying a new thermostat is a no-brainer but only if you use it correctly. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency a lot of people are using their thermostats incorrectly and are actually costing themselves a lot of money.

If you are going to be buying a new thermostat, here are some steps you can take to get the most out of your purchase.

Buy a model with the programs you need. New thermostats offer a number of programs from simple models that have the same settings every day, to more complicated (and expensive) models that can be customized for each day of the week. Know what will work best for your schedule and pick your thermostat accordingly.

Consider how convenient the thermostat is to use. Look for touch sensitive screens and other features that make the thermostat as easy to use as possible. Also look for a model that keeps its programming even after a black out or power failure. That way you don’t have to reprogram the whole system every time your power goes out.

Look for ease of installation. You want a model that can be installed in a snap, not one that will take you all day to figure out. Fortunately, a lot of today’s thermostats can be attached to your AC unit with just a few low voltage wires. Always match the thermostat to your specific Air Conditioning and Heating system.

Air Conditioning by Jay can help you with all of your Arizona Air Conditioning needs. Go to www.acbyj.com or call Valley wide at 602-266-3678 to schedule an appointment today.

7 Tips for Selecting an Arizona Air Conditioning Contractor

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Buying an air conditioner in Arizona can be a stressful and confusing process with long lasting consequences to both your wallet and your comfort. Fortunately the process is made far easier by air conditioning contractors who can evaluate your needs and come up with just the right system and installation to meet your needs and your budget. However, and this is the important part, while they can help you pick an AC unit, who can help you pick them?

Selecting the right contractor to install your air conditioner in Arizona is essential if you want a quick, easy installation, and a long lasting system that will keep your home cool and save you money on energy costs. Choosing the wrong company for the job can get you a shoddy system, terrible workmanship and a company that never follows through on their promises. Luckily there is hope; here are seven steps YOU can take to find the right contractor to install your Arizona air conditioner.

  1. Do your research: make sure the contractor you use doesn’t have any complaints with the Better Business Bureau or the Registrar of Contractors. Also look at their professional certifications such as those from SRP, APS, NBI, BPI, BEI, NATE, and The Arizona Heat Pump Council.

  2. Check with the government: permits must be filed with city hall before any work begins and inspection must be done once work ends. Call city hall and your home inspector to find out about your contractor’s record.

  3. Meet face to face: Before you begin work with a contractor, meet face to face to ask any questions you might have. Ask to see their licensing and insurance papers and also ask them for references.

  4. Get it in writing: Ask the contractor to provide you with a written estimate documenting the exact services they will be providing, the equipment you will be receiving, warranties offered, as well as a time frame for the job.

  5. Determine payment options: Ensure that your contractor accepts the payment option that works for you. Determine if they offer financing, take checks, or accept your visa card. Also establish the down payment amount.

  6. Schedule installation: Good contractors will work with you to set a time for the job that works with your schedule. Once the job is done they should also teach you to use the system and clean up after themselves.

  7. Set up a maintenance plan: Your contractor should offer you an affordable annual maintenance plan for your Arizona air conditioner. Routine maintenance allows them to keep the system running properly and effectively. This results in longer equipment life and lower energy bills.

Is Your Arizona Air Conditioner Being Phased Out?

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

In 1996 the EPA announced that it would begin phasing out the refrigerant R-22 which is a major component in many of the world’s most popular air conditioners and refrigeration units. They started a gradual reduction in the supply of the refrigerant that will eventually lead to all supply being removed from the market by 2020.

This move was triggered because R-22 has been shown to deplete the ozone layer that is said to protect us from ultraviolet rays. Scientists have suggested that a depleted ozone layer increases the likelihood of skin cancer and cataracts, and also may cause harm to the yield of some food crops.

The price of R-22 is also expected to rise significantly in coming years as supply continues to fall and demand increases in order to carry out repairs on existing products. This means that those who still have Arizona air conditioner repair needs will be paying more to fix problems with R-22.

Fortunately there is an alternative to R-22 and that is R-410A. R-410A does not cause any problems for the ozone layer and is considered to be an excellent replacement for R-22.

Though there is still awhile to go before R-22 is phased out, many are already recommending the switch to R-410A which is known under various trade names including GENETRON AZ-20®, SUVA 410A®, and Puron®.

Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team installs and services both R-22 and R-410A air conditioners in Arizona. Learn more or contact us today by going to www.acbyj.com or calling 602-266-3678.

What to Do If Your Arizona Air Conditioner Won’t Turn On

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It’s summer time in Arizona and as anyone who has spent more then a minute here knows, that means it’s time to turn the air conditioner on to full blast and avoid the outdoors at all costs. So what happens when you go to turn on your precious air conditioning unit and it absolutely refuses to turn on?

First things first, DON’T PANIC. Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team has made a whole lot of house calls to handle Arizona air conditioner repairs and we’ve found that there are a number of things that home owners can easily do on their own without having to call us to get their air conditioner running.

The first thing you will want to do is check your thermostat to make sure it is set to run at a level that is cooler then room temperature. With that handled, it’s time to move on to the electrical panel.

Just like with lighting, you air conditioner is connected to the fuse box so if you’ve blown the fuse connected to your AC, you need to replace it. Also while you are there make sure that the circuit breaker is switched to the on position. The air conditioning unit should also be connected to an outdoor disconnect box so if your unit has one of those, be sure to check the fuses there as well. Make sure you disconnect all electrical power before you begin to avoid injury.

Finally make sure that your filters are clean. Dirty filters restrict or cut off the flow of air and might prevent your air conditioner from operating properly or at all.

If you continue to have a problem after following these steps use our privacy assured online form to contact Air Conditioning by Jay, we specialize in Arizona air conditioners and Arizona air conditioning repairs and guarantee same day service. You can also call us Valley wide at 602-266-3678 to schedule an appointment today.

Understand The SEER Rating On Arizona Air Conditioners

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Before you go shopping for a new air conditioner for your Arizona home, you need to learn a little of the industry language. It will help you select the most efficient model that does not waste energy and saves money on monthly utility bills.

You will probably hear about the SEER rating on new air conditioners. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the rating, the more efficiently the air conditioner operates, leaving more of your cash in your wallet!

The federal government requires a minimum SEER of 13 out of a maximum rating of 20.

Why does the government set standards? Because higher-efficiency air conditioners save energy and cause less pollution.

There is a significant difference between a SEER rating of 13 and 20. The one with the SEER rating of 20 will use far less electricity to provide the level of comfort you want in your home

The unit with the higher SEER also saves money on electric bills. Well-designed new air conditioners are up to 70 percent more efficient than the current average. This can yield significant savings for consumers over the service life of their air conditioner.

A strong Phoenix air conditioning contractor like Air Conditioning by Jay can explain the differences in efficiency as the SEER number goes up and help you determine which air conditioner is right for your home.

If you have questions about air conditioner SEER ratings, ask us for answers.

Digital, Programmable, Thermostats Provide Savings And Better Climate Control

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Have you ever returned home from work to discover that you forgot to turn the air conditioner off or set the thermostat to reflect that no one was home? It happens in many homes.

Having the air conditioning blasting when no one is home is a BIG waste of energy and money.

Today’s digital and programmable thermostats can help solve the problem. Many of the homes in large developments all over Arizona were built with manual thermostats. These are not very accurate, and rely on a mercury filled tube to turn your system on and off.

The digital thermostats are very accurate, and many have the advantage of being programmable. You can pre-set the temperatures of the house for an entire week or more. If no one is home during the day, you can set your air conditioner at 85 degrees for most of the day, and have it go back to 78 degrees a half hour before anyone arrives back home.

Contact Arizona’s Air Conditioning by Jay to see a full line of these digital thermostats and select and install the one that best fits your family’s needs.

Where to Locate Your Central Air Conditioner

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

You are buying a central air conditioner to stay cool. The air conditioner unit also needs to stay cool and not be covered up to function properly.

Make sure your contractor installs the outside compressor in a shaded area, away from direct sunlight if possible.

Keep the outdoor unit away from bushes and shrubs, so that it can emit the “waste” heat that it generates. If anything blocks the unit, it cannot dissipate heat effectively, forcing the unit to work harder. This causes higher electricity bills.

The outdoor unit makes noise when it runs, although newer units run fairly quiet. Regardless, place it away from bedroom windows and away from neighboring homes, where its operating sounds can’t be heard and cause a disturbance. In Phoenix where air conditioning units can run for 24 hours in the hottest months, a noisy unit can become nerve wracking!

A licensed Phoenix air conditioning company will help you select the best location for your new equipment. The design experts at Air Conditioning by Jay know all the factors to consider, making you comfortable in the most energy efficient way possible. Talk with one of our experts to find out what is best for you.

Which Brand Of Equipment Is Best For Phoenix Air Conditioning?

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

There are many different brands and manufacturers of air conditioning units and related equipment available in the Phoenix area. Not surprising due to our extreme summer temperatures.

No one unit or brand is ‘best’. Think of it like cars, there are lots of different models with many different features, but there is at least one that is right for you, that has the features you want and is inline with your budget.

Air conditioning units come in all shapes and sizes, with different efficiency ratings, controls, and are designed for different sized living environments.

When looking to replace old air conditioning equipment, look for a company that stocks and services multiple brands. They will meet with you and after determining what features you want and what your budget is, will help you choose the best equipment for your particular situation.

Always use a licensed Arizona air conditioning contractor, as they have the training and experience to help you choose the right units, and have the expertise to install them properly.

Today’s air conditioning units are more that 60% more efficient that the ones manufactured more that just a few years ago. That means they use far less power to cool your home during the hot summer months. This can also save you a lot of money on your monthly energy bills.

The new air conditioning units also use a new gas for the refrigerant. This helps protect the ozone layer and helps reduce global warming.

Which Air Conditioning Unit Is Right For Your Arizona Home?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

When it’s time to upgrade your air conditioning unit in your home, which one is best?

While there is no one right answer to that question, when you deal with a Phoenix air conditioning company that is a certified contractor, they will use a few criteria to help you select.

The number one consideration is the size of your home, and the number of ‘zones’ that will have conditioned air. It is important to select the unit that is for the amount of square footage that will be covered.

One of the other big factors is the efficiency rating. While it is true that the most efficient units are more expensive, they are miserly with their use of electricity, and can save you money on your energy bill. Often these savings more than covers the extra cost of the highest efficiency rated units in the long run. Electric power providers like APS and SRP also give rebates for buying the most efficient equipment, and there are Federal Government rebates also that may apply.

The experts at Arizona Air Conditioning by Jay can help you sort through the noise to get the perfect solution for your home. Let us know how we can help you.

Do Air Filtration Systems Really Work?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

When asking whether air filtration systems work, you must first determine what type of filtration you are looking for.

Standard air filters on a furnace blower protect the fan and engine from large, lint, and other larger items that can get pulled into the motor and ultimately into the duct system.

However, when most people ask about air filtration systems, they are talking about systems that are meant to trap allergens and small particle pollution into the home. The most effective air filtration systems used what are called HEPA filters.

HEPA filters are tiny glass fibers made into a tightly woven paper. This tight weave allows air to pass through but blocks particles as small as 0.3 microns. That is 300 times smaller than the width of a human hair. They effectively block 99.97% of all pollutants

HEPA filters were developed by the Atomic Energy Commission and were designed to remove radio active dust from their plants. They are recommended by the US Department of Homeland Security.

Studies show that HEPA filter effectiveness can be further enhanced by combining their use with ionizers. Additionally, another study demonstrated that HEPA filters, when used with a germicidal UV lamp reduced bacteria by 80%.

If you are interested to find out how a HEPA filtration system can provide you better air quality in your home, contact AC By Jay. A member of our Comfort Team can speak to you or schedule a time to come out a go over your home filtration system options.

The Benefits of Programmable Thermostats

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Programmable thermostats provide a more effective way to regulate your home’s comfort level.  They allow you greater control over your home’s heating and cooling system allowing you to vary the temperature based on your schedule and that of others living in the home.

For instance: If no one is at the house between the hours of 8:30am and 3:30pm, there is little reason to provide as much heating in the winter or cooling in the summer.  You can also set different weekend settings or settings by season/time of year.  Imagine your home’s heat coming on 20 minutes prior to the time you wake-up in the winter months.

These are all possible uses and settings for a programmable thermostat.  Of course, should your schedule be altered for a day, you can override settings and manually control your home’s heating and cooling levels as needed.

By providing such control, you can get the maximum comfort from your system while simultaneously saving money.  When you consider the wide temperature variations in Arizona, this can be substantial.

Because they reduce energy utilization, programmable thermostats are also more environmentally friendly.

If you would like to find out more about whether a programmable thermostat is right for your home’s comfort system, contact a member of our Comfort Team.  We would be happy to answer any questions or setup a time to come out and install a programmable thermostat in your home.

The Importance of Training at Arizona Air Conditioning by Jay

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Your heating and air conditioning system is a critical factor in the comfort and enjoyment of your home.  Additionally, when working poorly, it can be a source of unnecessary costs.

Due to the fact that your system is typically made up of a complex series of interconnected components: fan, furnace, compressor, duct work, filters, etc. it requires specialized knowledge to ensure it is working as effectively as possible.

At AC By Jay, we understand how important a properly working system is for our customer’s comfort level and pocket book.  That is why we place such a huge emphasis on our certifications and technical training.

Our technicians and our company undergo rigorous ongoing training and certification by local and national agencies and trade organizations.  Believe me, we don’t do this so we can drop names of fancy letters after our name most of our customers don’t kno
