Heating systems in Phoenix Arizona
With forecasted highs of 98 degrees in the middle of October, most people don’t think about the heating portion of their HVAC system. It doesn’t seem as important as their air conditioning. Until it gets cold that is. But as residents of the valley of the sun know, it still gets cold enough in winter for the need to heat your home. You don’t need to see snowdrifts outside to feel the chill of the dessert at near freezing temperatures. Plus, after months of triple digit heat, it doesn’t take much to feel uncomfortable.
People generally believe that Phoenix heating systems don’t get the wear and tear from constant use in Arizona. But the fact is, most heating systems in Arizona are heat pumps. What this means is that after running all summer as an air conditioner, when it runs in heat mode, it is an air conditioner running backwards. The same components that ran all summer long are now running again, backwards. The condenser fan motor, blower motor and the compressor are running year round. They are still running just as they did in the summertime, only moving the refrigerant in the opposite direction. they actually “air condition the outdoor air”. In summer they absorb heat from inside your home and move it to the outdoor air. In Winter they absorb heat from the outdoor air and move it into your home.
If you do have a gas furnace, its true, the compressor and outdoor fan motor do not run in the winter, but, the indoor blower that ran all summer is running all winter. Gas furnaces also produce carbon monoxide. Improperly vented flue pipes can cause serious health problems. The fact that the furnace isn’t used all summer can increase the chance of birds or other critters nesting in your flue pipe. This can prevent proper venting causing unsafe conditions for you and your family.
Routine maintenance in the fall may seem silly, but it is just as important as your summer tune up. Checking combustion on gas furnaces and defrost operation of heat pumps can save you energy, frustration when the cold does come, and assure your safety in the winter months.
Most Heating and cooling companies offer maintenance programs that provide a summer tune up and a winter tune up. Other benefits include discounts on repairs, extended service hours, extended warranties on repairs made and other services to keep your system running as efficiently as possible.
Consumer Reports states in the June 1998 issue (page 3)
” Consider purchasing a service plan, perticulary if it combines cooling and heating functions. Most plans include 2 visits… a plan may allow the contractor to spot problems before they lead to a breakdown. You may also get discounts on repairs and recieve priority service, which could be a blessing should your cooling system break down during those blistering summer months or on a bitter cold day”
Air conditioning by Jays Comfort Team offer 3 tiers on Comfort Club Memberships to meet your individual needs.
Each offer amazing benefits to keep you comfortable year round. To learn more visit www.dialcomfort.com or give us a call @ 480-922.4455.

WARNING!!!!!
Don’t buy a new air conditioning or heating system from any home center such as Home Depot or Sears without knowing who the installing contractor is.
Most people don’t realize when you purchase a new heating or cooling system from a home center or chain store, the work is performed by subcontractors who are charged 10% for the job. This means they could be cutting corners to make a profit. Don’t get caught with a subcontracting nightmare!! Investing in a new energy efficient heating and cooling system isn’t just buying the “box”. You are depending on the installing contractor to do the install correctly so you can enjoy the efficiency promised, and a long system life. The most important day in an air conditioner’s life is the day it is installed. Proper equipment size, proper duct design and quality installation practices are crucial to performance and the longevity of your investment.
At Air Conditioning by Jay’s Comfort Team we never subcontract any of our installation work. All installations and service are done by our highly trained, certified technicians. 100% of our technicians are NATE certified ( North American Trade Excellence) 100% are certified master technicians by the Arizona Heat Pump Council. We are recommended by APS, SRP and Southwest Gas. All of the training and certifications are to assure that our clients receive the very best service when purchasing a new system, have a breakdown or just having routine maintenance done on their system.
The North Carolina Alternative Energy Corporation a non-profit organization, examined Air Conditioning manufacturers’ efficiencies versus the actual efficiencies that result after installation; they found the following:
90% of the units tested exhibited some sort of energy-wasting, comfort-robbing problem!
Other significant HVAC industry comfort energy related surveys reveal that:
*93% of equipment installed have Duct Leakage resulting in poor indoor air quality, health and safety concerns, drafts and uneven temperatures and may DOUBLE HVAC portion of the energy bill
*54% of equipment installed have incorrect refrigerant charge resulting in increased failure rate, reduced moisture removal, equipment typically noisier, uneven temperatures and could add as much as 17% to operation costs. Reduce life of system and major components (Compressors) causing elimination of ROI.
*47% of equipment installed are over sized resulting in equipment not running enough to wring out moisture, air in sunlit & shade rooms does not mix, equipment typically noisier and shorter equipment life
*70% of equipment installed have incorrect air flow resulting in uneven temperatures, poor moisture control, noisy grilles and registers and could add as much as 10% to operating costs

Living in Phoenix, AZ it is difficult to think about cooler temperatures with the known fact that Arizona is HOT. With the weather starting to cool down we should all be aware of the importance of maintaining our heating equipment.
Maintaining your equipment is just as important in the Fall as it is in the Spring. No one wants to have their equipment fail especially when you need it. Air Conditioning by Jay recommends having your heating/cooling equipment maintained twice a year. Once before each season occurs. If you do regular maintenance on your heating/cooling equipment it will bring you many benefits. Such as prolonged equipment life, peace of mind and the equipment will be more energy efficient.
As much as people think “well, the unit is running fine right now” that might not be the case. Just because the unit is running to a consumers satisfaction does not mean the unit is running at full capacity. By having preventative maintenance done regularly you can determine at a much earlier time when repairs are needed.
Think of your equipment as a car. Your car might be running fine but without regular tune-ups you could cause your car to have major problems. You have to get your oil changed regularly, have your brakes checked and many other tune-up requirements done to keep your car in mint condition. The same goes for your heating/cooling system the better you take care of your equipment the longer it will last with better efficiency.
Its a little know fact, that most systems in Phoenix, AZ are heat pumps. A heat pump in the heating mode is a air conditioner running backwards. Your are actually air conditioning the air outside. All manufactures ship heat pumps to Arizona without secondary strip heat installed. Any where else in the country they come with factory installed strip heaters. This is due to the fact that we very rarely have temperatures below 35 degrees. Most builders in Arizona don’t install the larger wire size needed for the extra amperage needed to run the auxiliary strip heat. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees in the valley if your systems refrigerant charge is not exactly right your outdoor unit will freeze up or defrost more times than necessary. When a heat pump goes into defrost mode it blows cold air into your house. When it comes out of defrost mode it has to reheat the house back up this causes extremely long run cycles. Which increases your energy consumption substantially.
Having a thorough maintenance done in the Fall by a qualified contractor will assure proper system operation in the colder months.

APS will pay you up to $250.00 per system to have your ducts tested and sealed to help reduce leakage.
Air Condotioning by Jays Comfort Team is one of the few contractors who hold the required BPI certification to qualify you for the APS duct testing and sealing program. If you are like most home owners in Arizona, as long as your heating and cooling system is keeping you comfortable, you dont give it much thought. But what you dont see could be costing you hundreds of dollars every year. Most duct sytems in Arizona are installed in attics or building cavities where they are hidden from view and rarely inspected.
The results of a recent APS study found:
As much of 33% of a heating/cooling systems capacity could be leaking through ducts causing loss of comfort, decreased capacity and longer run cycles.
In Arizona’s climate, on average, 50% of your annual energy bill is spent running your heating and cooling system.
On average in Arizona, 15% of heating and cooling capacity is lost due to duct leakage.
The impact of duct leakage is most severe in duct sytems installed in attics where tempatures can reach 140 degrees or more in the summer months. Most homes in Arizona have attic ductwork.
Fixing duct leaks can save you more than $200.00 in your annual energy cost while improving the comfort and air quality in your home.
Most repairs to ducts are relatively easy to perform and not very expensive, especially when APS is offering rebates up to $250.00 per system. All homes are different and Air Conditioning by Jays Comfort Team is qualified and well trained to evaluate your home and offer realistic repairs that are beneficial to your energy consumption, your equipment lifespan and the air quality in your home. For more information on this program visit www.dialcomfort.com or http://www.aps.com/main/green/choice/choice_18.html?source=acjump

Customers of APS now have the option of going green on their energy usage on all of their appliances including their Arizona air conditioners.
The Green Choice Rate Program by APS offers a way for environmentally conscious Arizonans to make a difference by choosing to have their energy come from clean sources including wind, geothermal, and solar power.
According to APS “Green Choice options offer a way to help preserve the environment while providing for a secure energy source for our future. You’ll be making use of renewable resources, reducing pollution and ensuring a better quality of life for our community.”
Currently there are three options available to APS customers to fit various budgets. GPS-1 and GPS-2 make use of wind and geothermal energy and costs and additional $0.01 per kWh of energy on top of your usual costs. You choose how much clean energy you would like to buy either in blocks of 100kWh, or by percentage (10%-100%) and APS uses that amount of clean energy to power your home.
For those interested in solar power, the third option is called Solar-3. You can choose to have either half or your entire house powered by solar energy for a charge of $0.166 on top of your normal energy costs.
Go to the Green Choice Rate Program website for more information.

New GeoSmart loans by APS offer Arizonans solar power with no upfront costs.
APS is bound and determined to get more Arizonans to switch to solar power. Already, between APS incentives and government tax credits, a 3-kilowatt rooftop solar electric unit takes a hefty $21,000 price tag and reduces it to a much more reasonable $9,000.
Even with this large discount, there are still surprisingly few people switching to solar power for their home and Arizona air conditioner. Despite the electricity savings as well as the huge environmental benefits of using the sun as a renewable energy source, many are unable to meet the high upfront costs required to purchase a solar unit.
In order to encourage more people to switch over to solar power, APS has devised a way to entirely eliminate the initial costs of installing solar panels. In partnership with the Electric Gas & Industries Association (EGIA), APS is now offering access to GeoSmart ® Loans. GeoSmart loans are competitive unsecured financing specifically for people who want to invest in solar power for their home.
The loan covers the entire cost of purchasing the unit and offers rates between 7.99% and 12.99% depending on which options you choose. The loans are for anywhere between $2,500 and $50,000 and are for offer terms for 10, 15, or 20 year periods.
This program is an excellent option for those who are concerned about the environment, or anyone who simply wants to save money on their monthly energy bills.

How to use weatherstripping and caulking to seal your home and save as much as 15% on your energy bill.
Did you know that an improperly sealed home can waste up to 15% of your energy bill compared to a home that is properly sold? Chances are, unless your home was built recently, you have numerous leaks that allow the cool air that your Arizona air conditioner provides to escape.
Weatherstripping and caulking your home are two of the least expensive ways that you can save money on your Arizona air conditioning bill and keep your home cool this summer.
You can use caulking to seal small cracks and holes in your home that are responsible for some of your energy loss. This is a relatively cheap and easy process if you know of any cracks or holes that need to be fixed. There are a number of different types of caulk available including acrylic which can be painted over and cleaned with water, silicone, which is good for tile, glass, and metal, and adhesive caulk works best with countertops and sinks.
Weatherstripping involves sealing doors and windows that are responsible for most of your home’s energy waste. A typical front door has a quarter inch crack at the bottom which is constantly letting cold air out of your house while bringing the warm air in. Using weatherstripping allows you to eliminate those cracks from both the doors and the windows and can save you a lot on your energy bills.
There are a number of types of weather stripping available including self adhesive foam, felt, interlocking metal, V-strips, and tubular rubber. The difficulty of installation and price for each of these methods varies greatly with the self adhesive foam tending to be the easiest and cheapest while the interlock metal is often more expensive and requires a professional to install.
If you need help keeping your Arizona air conditioning bill low give Air Conditioning by Jay a call. We guarantee same day service for Arizona air conditioning repair and installation. Is air conditioning in Arizona more environmentally friendly than heating in New England? The results may surprise you.
We’ve all heard the line about how much air conditioning in Arizona is environmentally harmful and how we should not settle in such unsustainable climates. At the same time, we have the image of the “green” New Englander using a wood stove that does little harm to the environment.
Is it possible that the reverse is true? An article on Wired Magazine’s website claims that air conditioning actually emits far less CO2 then heating. It makes sense too. Taking 70 degrees as the ideal temperature, we see that in Phoenix we only need to lower the temperature by 40 degrees from 110 to get to ideal. However, during the winter months when we need little more than a sweater, the New Englander is facing 0 degrees and must heat his house up by 70 degrees. That’s 30 degrees more then what we in Arizona faced during the summer.
A typical house heated by oil fuel in the north east emits near 13,000 pounds of CO2 annually. During that same year a house in Arizona will only produce 900 pounds of CO2. That’s really quite a difference when you consider that Arizona Air Conditioners continue to improve in efficiency every year.

If you want to go green, stay cool, and save lots of money on your Arizona air conditioning energy bill this summer than it may be time to switch to a Carrier air conditioner. Since they were founded in 1902, Carrier has been a leader in air conditioning innovation. Now they have taken that same creative spirit to design some of the most energy efficient, environmentally friendly air conditioners in Arizona.
An environmentally friendly system allows you to stay extra cool this summer and avoid the guilt over using outdated air conditioners that pollute the environment. Using the new refrigerant called Puron, Carrier has eliminated the harmful effects to the greenhouse that many believe are at least partially responsible for global warming. Plus, by choosing a highly efficient unit, you will not only be saving money on your energy bills, but you will also reduce the amount of energy that power companies produce in ways that are harmful for the environment.
Here are two of our favorite “green” Carrier air conditioners that you can use to stay cool this summer.
Infinity Series 24ANA1

The Infinity Series 24ANA1 is a top of the line Carrier air conditioner with the features to match. With a 21 SEER rating it is one of the most energy efficient air conditioners in Arizona. Additionally, thanks to its Puron refrigerant, it is harmless to the environment. It’s also Energy Star compliant which means that it is rated by the U.S. government as having superior energy efficiency.
Other features of the unit include the Infinity Control for remote programming, a noise level of only 70 dB, durable construction, and humidity control. The unit is covered by a 10-year compressor limited warranty and a 5-year parts warranty.
Comfort Series 24ACA4

The Comfort Series 24ACA4 is an air conditioner for people who are concerned about the environment but want an economical alternative to the Infinity Series. With a 14 SEER rating and Puron refrigerant, this unit is still an excellent choice for anyone looking to “go green” or for anyone who just wants to save some money on their energy bill.
The 24ACA4 has durable galvanized steel construction with WeatherArmor to provide protection against the elements. And with a noise level of only 74dB, chances are it is a lot more quite then air conditioners that you are used to. The unit is covered by a 10-year compressor limited warranty and a 5-year parts warranty.

Lennox offers some of the most popular Arizona Air Conditioners around, in part because of their stellar reputation, but also thanks to their commitment to “developing energy-efficient heating, cooling and indoor air quality products that help homeowners save money, enhance air quality and improve their health.
All of Lennox’s air conditioners are Energy Star qualified, a U.S. government-sponsored designation which recognizes excellence in energy-efficient performance. According to the EPA, if just one in ten households installed ENERGY STAR heating and cooling products, the change would keep more than 17 billion pounds of pollution out of the air.
Many Arizona air conditioners made by Lennox are perfect for those who are interested in environmentally friendly units, however here are just a few of our favorites:
Dave Lennox Signature Collection XC21

The XC21 is one of the most energy efficient air conditioners on the market today with a SEER rating of 20.5. Additionally the unit uses the chlorine-free R-410A refrigerant rather than the ozone depleting R-22 chemical common in many air conditioners. The system also boasts incredibly quite operation as low as 69 dB, which is approximately 13 times quieter than a standard air conditioner.
The unit also includes a high-pressure safety switch, an onboard operations monitor, and a ten-year limited warranty on the compressor and covered components.
Merit Series 14ACX

The 14ACX is an economical and eco-friendly alternative to the XC2. Its SEER rating of up to 15 means that you will still see significant savings over an older unit and its R-410A refrigerant means that you won’t be ruining the environment.

Are you ready to get environmentally friendly with your air conditioner in Arizona?
Earlier this month we wrote about what you can do to “go green” when purchasing a new Arizona air conditioner. We talked about looking for a system with a high SEER rating, choosing the new R-410A refrigerant, and getting a professional installation to ensure that your system lives up to its potential.
Trane, the maker of some of our most popular Arizona air conditioners understands the trend towards environmentally friendly units and has come out with some excellent options for eco-friendly homes and businesses.
Here are two of our favorite environmentally friendly Trane air conditioners:
Trane XL16i
The Trane XL16i in an ultra efficiency unit that offers a SEER rating of up to 17.15 making it incredibly efficient and likely to save you a ton on home cooling. Additionally the R-410A refrigerant means that you won’t hurt the ozone layer or release harmful toxins into the environment.
Other features include durable construction with WeatherGuard II, two-stage cooling to prevent interior temperature swings, and a ten-year limited warranty on compressors, outdoor coil, and internal functional parts.
Trane XR14
The Trane XR14 is a high efficiency unit with a SEER rating of up to 14. While not as efficient as the XL16i, the XR14 is

an excellent alternative for more budget conscious buyers. This unit also uses the safer R-410A refrigerant and is therefore an excellent choice for anyone interested in lessening their carbon footprint.
Other features of the XR14 include durable construction, a sound insulator for quieter operation, a ten-year limited
warranty on compressors and the outdoor coil, and a five-year limited warranty on internal functional parts. There is also an optional Trane Air Cleaner that removes dust, pollen and other irritants throughout your home or business.

With increasing concern about global warming, greenhouse gasses, and pollution, more people than ever have look towards more environmentally friendly and “green” options for keeping their home cool this summer with an Arizona air conditioner.
By considering a few very important options when choosing a new Arizona air conditioner, you can reduce your carbon footprint, avoid toxic chemicals, and save a whole lot of money thanks to reduced cooling costs.
If you have followed this blog for any amount of time, you’ll know that choosing an A/C unit with a high SEER rating is essential for energy conservation. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the rating, the more efficiently the air conditioner operates. An efficient air conditioner means that not only will you have lower cooling costs, but you also be helping the environment by using less energy.
Currently SEER ratings are required to be at 13 or higher, but chances are that if you have an older unit it has a SEER rating much lower than 13. In fact, modern Arizona air conditioners are up to 60% more efficient then older models. Replacing your old air conditioner is a great way to save money and go green.
Another very important issue to consider when purchasing an air conditioner in Arizona is the type of refrigerant used in your system. We’ve written previously about the EPA mandated phase out of the R-22 refrigerant and its replacement with the R-410A refrigerant. The EPA determined that the older R-22 chemical could be toxic and likely depleted the ozone layer.
Fortunately, scientists have discovered that the R-410A chemical caused no such problem and many have begun to purchase air conditioners with the new refrigerant. Using it is certainly the environmentally friendly option and it will also save money in the long run thanks to the expected price increase in R-22.
The final issue to consider when looking for an environmentally friendly Arizona air conditioner is the qualifications of the technician that installs the unit. Ultimately buying the best system in the world is pointless unless it is selected and installed correctly. Make sure that your technician is trusted and qualified to install air conditioners with the R-410A refrigerant.
Air Conditioning by Jay has helped homes and businesses all around Arizona install environmentally friendly air conditioners since 1983. Our technicians are master certified and have top level certifications from SRP, HPC, NATE, BEI, as well as most systems manufacturers. How to find the latest and greatest rebates to save you a ton when buying a new air conditioner in Arizona.
During the exceedingly hot Arizona summers, having a working air conditioner in your home ranks just behind food and shelter as the most important part of your continued survival. Without a working air conditioner in Arizona many people are forced to leave their homes and take refuge in better cooled places until it is bearable to return late at night when the temperature is slightly lower. As anyone who has needed to have their Arizona air conditioner repaired will tell you, this is far from an ideal or comfortable situation to be in for any amount of time.
If you are worried that your older air conditioner might break during a week of 115 degree days or you are simply interested in the energy savings and increased comfort that a new high efficiency air conditioner in Arizona provides, then it might be time to do some research. Many people who are shopping for a new unit find that no matter where they look, the price of a new unit is very expensive. However, they don’t realize that with the large savings they will have on their energy bill, the increased comfort they will gain, and the decreased harm to the environment, the unit is actually a far more affordable investment then they think.

An explanation of zoning systems and how they increase your comfort while saving you a ton on Arizona air conditioning bills.
As we all know, no two people are the same. Some people are tall, some short, some people want the temperature of their Arizona air conditioner set at 80 degrees, and others find 72 degrees to be optimal. Unfortunately, those people often live in the same house and many are often forced to compromise on a temperature that leaves nobody completely satisfied.
Fortunately, today’s technology allows everyone to be happy and all the while save a bunch of money on cooling costs. Using a system of dampers in the ductwork, zones of the house are created and each is controlled by its own thermostat. Zones can be segmented by upstairs and downstairs, by living area and sleeping area, or even individually room by room. Additionally if you have a home office, you can keep that cool without needing to cool the rest of the house that is left empty for much of the day.
The benefits of a zoning system are numerous and will make everyone in your family more comfortable while costing you less money. Since each room can set its own temperature, everyone in the house can be in their ideal comfort zone at all times.
Additionally, using a zoning system allows you to only use your Arizona air conditioner where it is needed. For instance during the day time, it is generally unnecessary to keep bedrooms cool as there will likely be nobody in them. By using a zoning system, no air will be used to cool unused rooms, thus saving you huge amounts on your energy bill.
If you are interested in using a zoning system with your Arizona air conditioner, Air Conditioning by Jay can help. Contact us today by using our privacy assured online form or call 602-266-3678.

An explanation of common air duct problems and why fixing them can save you a bundle on energy costs.
Did you know that in the typical home 20 to 40 percent of the cold air that moves through a duct system is lost thanks to broken, damaged, or incorrectly installed parts. This means that a large percentage of your energy bill could be going towards cooling completely unused portions of your house such as crawl spaces or the attic. Additionally, this leaky system means that you will have a harder time staying cool with your air conditioner in Arizona during this particularly hot summer.
Here are the most common duct work problems according to studies performed by APS, National Comfort Institute (NCI) and the Arizona air conditioner repair experts on the Air Conditioning by Jay Comfort Team.
- Leaks at the connection with the ducts
- Return air duct leaks
- Furniture is blocking the air duct register
- There are leaks at the equipment and filter slots
- Insulation has fallen off of duct work in attics and crawl spaces
- Supply air duct leaks
- Kinks in duct work or improper installation which restricts the airflow
The more leaks and kinks your home develops, the harder time your Arizona air conditioner will have cooling your home. An inefficient duct system will make your home less comfortable and will cost you a lot of extra money on your energy bill.
A highly trained Arizona air conditioning repair technician can quickly identify the problem areas within your home and replace or repair all of the damaged, disconnected, and undersized ducts which make up the bulk of the problem. Your technician should also seal any leaks and all registers and grills, replace filters, insulate ducts, and conduct safety tests as part of the repair work.

A guide to common warning signs that mean it is time to replace your Arizona air conditioner.
As anyone who has ever needed their Arizona air conditioner repaired during the hot summer months will tell you, a broken air conditioner will make you completely miserable. Many people actually have to leave their homes and stay with a friend or at a hotel just to avoid the heat while their air conditioner in Arizona is repaired or replaced.
While there is no 100% forecast for when your old air conditioner will sputter out and die, there are some warning signs. By paying attention to these signs, you can take action before you are forced out of your home and into a hotel room.
Warning Sign #1: Your Unit is Over 10 Years Old. If your Arizona air conditioner is over ten years old, it stands a far greater risk of malfunctioning then a newer unit. By switching to a newer system, you will save over 20% on your energy bill, reduce greenhouse gas, and ensure that you stay cool this summer.
Warning Sign #2: Increased Need for Arizona Air Conditioner Repairs. Even if fixing minor problems is not costing you very much, if your unit needs “semi-frequent” repairs it could be reaching the end of its lifespan.
Warning Sign #3: Energy Costs Shoot Up. Higher energy costs could mean that the system has started to operate less efficiently and might need to be replaced soon to avoid astronomical cooling bills.
Warning Sign #4: Rooms Stay too Hot or Get too Cold. This might be a sign that the system is starting to malfunction. It could also mean you have ductwork/airflow problems or inadequate insulation.
Warning Sign #5: Your Home Gets Dusty. Excessive dust is often caused by leaky ducts that pull particles from attics, basements, and even outside!
Warning Sign #6: Your Arizona Air Conditioner Gets Noisy. Increased noisiness could be caused by an inadequately sized duct system or a malfunctioning indoor coil. Also, newer systems are almost all much quieter then their older counterparts.
If you have started to notice any of these warning signs, it might be time to replace your Arizona air conditioner before it breaks when you need it most.

How to choose the right air conditioner that will save you money and keep you comfortable using a simple online calculator.
Buying a high energy efficiency air conditioner in Arizona can seem like an expensive proposal. When the price difference between a 13 SEER system and a 21 SEER system can be quite substantial, many people are left to wonder if the better system is really worth it. Despite the fact that Arizona air conditioning uses a huge percentage of the energy consumed during the summer months, many are unsure that the energy savings justify purchasing the higher rated system.
Thanks to a new cooling calculator, people looking to buy a new system can now see approximately how much they will save or spend depending on which system they buy. Armed with this information, anyone can be confident that they are buying the right system to keep them cool while saving both money and energy.
Use the cooling calculator to compare Arizona air conditioners and find the one that will save you money and keep you cool all summer long.
To use this calculator you will need some basic information about the units you want to compare including the SEER rating, the cooling capacity, the cost of the unit, and whether you will use a programmable thermostat. You can get this information from your technician or you can find most of it at the manufacturer’s website.
Keep in mind that this calculator is based off of average use and may be different depending on your circumstances.

Understanding the Quality Installation Standard and why you need it to select the right Arizona air conditioning contractor.
Choosing the right contractor to install your new air conditioner in Arizona is a decision that could end up costing you a lot more money if you don’t find the right people for the job. An incorrect installation can cause even the best system to break more easily, require more maintenance, and use much more energy than it actually needs. In fact, a top of the line 19 SEER system will be no more energy efficient then an inexpensive 13 SEER system if installed incorrectly.
So how can you find a contractor that you know will provide a high quality installation using just the right system to keep you cool and your energy bill low? The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) think they have an answer.
The Quality Installation (QI) Standard was introduced last year as a way to guarantee that your Arizona air conditioner installation met top standards that promote both comfort and energy savings. Already these QI standards have been embraced by both local and federal governments as well as utility companies.
It is expected that additional rebates will be offered by utility companies to consumers as a way to encourage using a contractor who follows the QI standards in the near future.
By choosing a QI contractor, you can expect an installation that adheres to the best industry practices for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. Additionally, a properly installed air conditioner will require fewer repairs and even extend the life of the unit significantly.
Air Conditioning by Jay is proud to have incorporated much of the Quality Installation Standard with all new air conditioning systems we install. We are known for our consistent record of high quality Arizona air conditioner installations. Not sure if you are ready to take the plunge and invest in a new air conditioning system? Here are some considerations to think about when you are making this difficult decision. Remember, most Arizona air conditioners last for 12 to 15 years with proper installation and maintenance.
- New air conditioning systems last longer then ever and provide increased energy efficiency.
- The entire system must be replaced. The two parts of the system, the indoor coil and the outdoor condensing unit, were once capable of being mixed and matched but due to the high technology, high efficiency units, both parts must now integrate perfectly.
- Your system needs to be the right size for your home. This is very important because a small system will not keep you cool while a large system will be inefficient and cost you more in energy bills.
- Your house’s power source might need upgrading. If you are living in an older home it might only contain 110-volt, 60-amp service which is probably only capable of handling the electricity requirements you already have. Adding air conditioning in Arizona to your home might require you to upgrade your electrical output to a dedicated 230-volt circuit with between 20 and 50 amps of power.
- Know your new systems SEER rating. SEER is a measure of how energy efficient you air conditioner is. The government mandates that all new systems be rated at 13 or higher. The higher the SEER rating is the better, but higher SEER also means higher prices.
- Make sure the air conditioning system is properly matched. Ask the technician for an ARI Reference Number. Enter the number into ARI’s Directory of Certified Product Performance and it will verify that the match is correct and provide you with a certificate. For highly efficient systems you might be able use this certificate to obtain a tax credit.
- Know how quiet you need your air conditioner to be. Most Arizonans are used to the constant sound of air conditioning and new units are far quieter then their older counterparts but there are still differences. If you are looking for even quieter performance parts, insulated compressor compartments, discharge mufflers and new fan designs might be worth your money. All ARI rated Air Conditioners have decibel ratings. Better systems are rated in the low to mid 70’s range. The lower the rating the quieter your system will be. If quiet Air Conditioning is important to you remember to compare decibel ratings.
Purchasing a new air conditioner in Arizona doesn’t need to be difficult. Want to get the most out of your air conditioner in Arizona? Here are some steps you can take to keep your AC running smoothly and effectively.
- Change the air filter regularly. Dirty air filters will keep air from flowing correctly and by keeping your filter clean; you can save between 5 and 15 percent on energy usage. Be sure to follow all manufacturer recommendations and turn the system off while changing the filter.
- Do not block your inside air condition vents with furniture. Vents need to be unobstructed so that the air can circulate freely.
- Keep the outdoor condensing unit clean. This large box in your yard should be kept clean from plants, grass, leaves or anything else which might block its airflow and reduce efficiency. You should also clean the unit off from time to time with a hose.
- Close vents in unused rooms and keep doors to those rooms closed.
- Keep the fan speed on high. Unless Arizona starts to get humid, a high fan speed is best to keep your house at the perfect temperature.
- Hire a professional certified Arizona air conditioner repair specialist. Problems with your system are best fixed by trained professionals who know exactly what needs to be done to maximize efficiency.

As we enter these hot summer months, air conditioning in Arizona is going into overtime and people who are not prepared are going to see their energy bills shoot through the roof. In fact the Department of Energy estimates that heating and cooling accounts for almost half of a homes energy use. In Arizona it’s typically even more!
Fortunately there is hope for those of us who are looking to save some money this year. Here are five steps that you can follow to save energy with your Arizona air conditioner.
- Regularly Maintain Your Equipment: Having annual maintenance on your air conditioner ensures that it operates in tip top shape. This will help keep energy efficiency high and your system lasting longer.
- Seal and insulate your house: Seal off air ducts leading to non air conditioned places like garages and attics. Be sure to use either mastic or foil-backed tape. Once you have sealed off leaky ducts, wrap them with insulation to keep the cold air going exactly where you want it to.
- Buy a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature of the house automatically. When you are gone at work you can save energy by having the air conditioning automatically switched off until right before coming home when it can automatically switch back on. The EPA estimates that if properly used, this type of thermostat can save over $150 a year.
- Replace your old air conditioner: If you have an old AC unit, you might be spending far more then you should on energy costs. New air conditioners are far more energy efficient then older models. You can compare models by looking at their SEER rating (the higher the better).
- Use a qualified Arizona air conditioning technician: Using a certified professional ensures that your air conditioning system will be the right one for your needs. He or she will properly match, size and install you system to the correct specifications. Proper installation ensures that you will get the maximum energy efficiency out of your new Arizona air conditioner.

Today’s air conditioners in Arizona are lasting longer then ever and are reaching new levels of energy efficiency unimaginable just a few years ago. They are also quieter, more reliable, and easier to use the ever before. However, if you need another great reason why you should get a new air conditioner, look no further then SRP’s PowerWise Cool Cash Rebate.
Arizona residents who are SRP customers looking to buy a high-efficiency air conditioner are being treated to cash rebates based on the quality of the system they purchase. Rebates are based on the type of system purchased and range from $250 for a 14 SEER system to $600 for a system with a 16 SEER rating.
However there is a catch, you need to buy a system by September 30th to qualify for the rebate. Also you must have the installation performed by a licensed contractor to verify that airflow and refrigerant charge are within manufacturer’s specifications.
Air Conditioning by Jay is an SRP certified contractor and can help you participate in the rebate program. Go to www.DialComfort.com or call Valley wide at 602-266-3678 to schedule an appointment today.

You may have heard neighbors marvel at the high efficiency and money savings of their ENERGY STAR appliances. You may have seen them advertised on TV but you may know little about them. The ENERGY STAR label is as important to consumers as it is to the environment.
The ENERGY STAR label makes it easy to identify non-polluting, energy-efficient products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Consumers usually shop for ENERGY STAR appliances when they want to lower monthly utility bills or are ‘green’ conscious/
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) publishes ENERGY STAR booklets on the performance of specific products and the ENERGY STAR label is on most major appliances that meet efficiency standards. If you don’t see it, ask! Covered equipment includes heating and cooling systems, office equipment, lighting, and home electronics. The cost savings for using ENERGY STAR products is huge and can have a big impact on the savings in energy bills — an estimated $12 billion in 2005.
Arizona’s Air Conditioning by Jay installs air conditioners in Phoenix homes and businesses with the Energy Star label. If you’d like to learn more, use our privacy assured online form and one of our specialists will contact you.

Here in Arizona with our very hot summers, environment friendly air conditioning systems aren’t just the right thing to do, they can also save you a ton of money on your electricity bills.
Newer air conditioning systems are environmentally better in two important ways.
The newer refrigerant gas, 410a has been called the refrigerant of the future, and is the refrigerant used in most new air conditioning systems. This gas protects the ozone layer which may help prevent global warming.
New air conditioning systems are also much more efficient, using less power to produce the same cooling effect as older, less efficient systems, and that translates into lower electric bills this summer. Most new systems use 40 to 50% less electricity than units 10 years old or older.
In Arizona, both Arizona Public Service (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP) that provide most of the electricity requirements of the Phoenix metropolitan area have rebate programs to help with the costs of replacement, and you may be eligible for an additional $300 Federal Tax break as well.
To find out more about these rebate programs, click here for APS, and here for SRP.
AC by Jay is proud to be a certified contractor for both APS and SRP. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, go to www.acbyj.com or call Valley wide 602-266-3678.

Everyone is busy work, family, and other daily pulls on our time make thinking about how we use energy, the rights and the wrongs, as often the last topic to enter our mind.
However, if everyone spent just a little bit of time considering the impact of our energy use, we could substantially reduce both cost and our impact on the world.
Here is a simple list of energy rights and wrongs.
The Energy Wrongs
Forget about your filters.
Especially if you don’t mind paying more each month for heating and cooling your home. Dirty filters mean your system must work harder, resulting is less effectiveness (less comfort) and higher cost.
Hide (block) your vents
Maybe your heating and cooling vents aren’t the most attractive part of your home décor. However, covering them with furniture or other items dramatically reduces your systems effectiveness. Let them be seen.
Buy it and forget it
Heating and cooling systems are almost constantly in use. In the same way that automobile and other mechanical devices need checkups and tune ups to ensure proper and effective use, so does your heating and cooling system. If you have not had your system serviced in some time, consider doing so this season.
Cut corners on insulation to reduce expense
Sure, you can save a little money by putting less expensive insulation in your attic and walls but those savings are temporary. Not only will you pay more in energy cost over the life of your home but your system will provide less comfort.
Keep your garage door open
During the winter months especially, an open garage door allows cold temperature to more easily enter your home. When you are not coming in and out, keep that garage door closed. In order to allow hot air to escape your garage door in the summer, install a small window or vent and vent fan.
Set your thermostat really high
This works great to keep you warm as long as you don’t mind paying exorbitant energy bills. There is a misconception that setting your thermostat higher will help your system heat up faster. This is simply not true. Set your thermostat at the desired, reasonable temperature.
The Energy Rights
High tech thermostats
Programmable thermostats are an excellent way to save energy and money. You can customize the settings to ensure maximum comfort during waking hours, times when you are home versus at work, and even weekend settings.
Don’t heat the entire neighborhood
Remember when your parents asked you if you were heating the entire neighborhood? Ensure that weather stripping and caulking in window and door frames is not cracked or missing. It takes only a few minutes to re-apply caulking and will greatly increase your heating and cooling systems effectiveness.
Check your ducts
Leaky ducts can account for anywhere from 10-30% of your total heating and cooling bill. It reduces the comfort level in your home and dramatically increases your energy use and associated costs.
Insulate outlets and installed electrical devices
The areas behind and around outlets and other electrical devices can be a significant source of cold and hot air transfer between the inside or your home and the outside. There is insulation specifically made for outlets and other electrical devices.
Switch to compact fluorescents
As you replace light bulbs around your home, begin using compact fluorescent bulbs rather than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are just as effective but last 10 times longer and use 75% less energy.
Plant a tree
Trees add to your home’s look and when properly placed on the sunny side of a home can have a significant affect on your home’s comfort level and your air conditioning bill. The shade during the hotter parts of the day reduces surface heat which transfers through your walls into your home.
If you are looking for other ways to make your home’s heating and cooling system more effective, consider speaking to a member of AC By Jay’s comfort team.

Light bulbs are one of the technological advances that you never read about. However, advances in the past 10 years and the development of Energy Star compliant light bulbs can result in significant energy savings.
It is estimated that if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an Energy Star compliant bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year. Additionally, the reduction in greenhouse gases would be significant.
In the past fluorescent bulbs were too large and ineffective for general household light fixture use. However, newer fluorescent bulbs provide the same or better light, last 10 times longer than traditional bulbs, use far less energy (about 75% less), and give off less heat (again, 75% less) than traditional bulbs.
When it is time to replace light bulbs in your home, look for energy star compliant fluorescent bulbs and save.

As we head into the winter months, it is always a good idea to review steps you can take to save energy. Here at AC By Jay, we are committed to ensuring your home comfort system is as efficient as possible.
These 10 steps will reduce your energy usage, your monthly bill, and are environmentally friendly as well.
- Set your thermostat lower
Lowering your thermostat just a couple of degrees can greatly reduce your overall energy usage and reduce your energy bill. If you get a little chilly, wear slippers and a sweatshirt or housecoat.
- Get a programmable thermostat
Even better than simply reducing the temperature on the thermostat, you can program your thermostat to reduce the temperature at night while you are asleep and start warming the house 30 minutes prior to waking up.
- Check weather stripping and window gaps
Gaps or loose windows and warm stripping add to drafts and greatly reduce the efficiency of your heating system.
- Install newer insulation
If your home is 10 years older or more, newer insulation may offer increased effectiveness and reduce your energy use.
- Install storm windows, replace any single-paned windows
This is especially true in older homes. Storm windows or thicker dual-paned windows greatly reduce the transfer of cold into the home and heat loss. Storm windows can reduce heating cost by 10-15%.
- Replace or clean furnace filters regularly
Clogged filters mean your heating system must work harder to get the same result. Your furnace systems manufacturer has regularly scheduled replacement timeframe, make sure you don’t go for longer periods than recommended.
- Check for holes or openings to the outside
Areas around vents, cracks in walls of older homes, door jams, etc. can all be sources of exposure to the outside air and increased energy use.
- Open curtains and blinds on sunny days, close them at night
Let the sun help warm your home in the morning. Also curtains and shades form an extra source of insulation, so close them at night.
- Close vents to rooms that are not used
If you have a room that is mostly unused, don’t waste energy heating it.
- Use household appliances effectively for instance, run your washer, dryer, and dishwasher only when full. Use warm or cold water instead of hot when washing clothes. In cooler months, prop your oven door open to allow the heat to enter the home (note: only prop it slightly and be aware of children or animals in the home).
If you are still concerned that your heating system is using too much energy or you want to look into a high efficiency furnace or just have us check your overall system performance, contact a member of our Comfort Team.

One of the most innovative manufacturers of household appliances, Amana is also a recognized leader in Heating and Air Conditioning Systems.
|

The Amana AMV9
|
Amana carries an entire line of high-efficiency gas furnaces. These furnaces rate from 92.1% AFUE to 96% AFUE. Remember our prior discussions on AFUE, which measures how much of the energy used to run the furnace is converted into actual usable heat. In short, higher AFUE means lower energy bill, cleaner/greener operation, and greater comfort.
Most of their furnace models include variable speed air blowers as well.
Why do you care about variable speed air blowers? If you have a single-speed blower on your furnace, it is likely you experience a blast of cold air when the unit comes on. This is due to the furnace blower operating at full-speed before the furnace is generating heat.
A variable speed blower negates this by blowing less when starting, ramping up to full-speed as the furnace air temperature rises. Again, resulting in greater comfort. |
Their high-efficiency models include:
AMV9 - 95% AFUE - Two-Stage/Variable-Speed
ACV9 - 93% AFUE - Two-Stage/Variable-Speed
AMH95 - 95% AFUE - Twin-Comfort/(convertible) Multi-Speed
GCH9 - 93% AFUE - Dual$aver (Convertible), Multi-Speed
GKS9 - 92.1 AFUE - Single-Stage, Multi-Speed
All units come with a 10 Year Limited Warranty on functional parts and a Lifetime Limited Warranty on the Heat Exchanger.
If you are interested in finding out which unit best fits your budget and needs, contact a member of our Comfort Team.

APS offers its energy-efficiency rebate to anyone who installs energy efficient air conditioners. But in addition to looking out for the environment, it is also looking out for people with low incomes. APS is one of many air conditioner companies in the country offering discounts and other services for low-income households.
APS’ program offers discounts of 14 to 40 percent to low-income families to help them afford summer air conditioning bills and other necessary energy expenses.
Some states have gone beyond APS’ bonuses. Philadelphia’s power company, PECO, has recently won a reward for its energy reduction program for low-income customers. In addition to discounts, PECO’s program helps people who might otherwise not be able to afford air conditioners and heaters to finance these necessities of life.
So while we all still cringe when the power bill arrives, and take measures such as installing highly energy efficient air conditioners to minimize the costs, at least we can feel reassured that our money is going to companies that are working hard to be socially responsible and help everyone live comfortably.

When you want to find the most energy efficient air conditioner, the higher SEER rating is better. As we saw in our recent comparison of air conditioners from all the major brands, the Carrier 24ANA1 is the most energy efficient central air conditioner from any of the major manufacturers.
An obvious question is of the features such an efficient air conditioner can offer. The answer is that the 24ANA1 has quite a few features. It is quiet, with an advertised sound rating of only 20dB.
The 24ANA1 is also designed to remove a lot of moisture from the air. Remember that air conditioners serve two functions. Obviously, they cool the air, but air conditioners also remove moisture from the air. This air conditioner feature helps to cool you in the same way that a dry day outdoors is cooler than a humid day at the same air temperature.
Carrier’s air conditioner is even helping the environment. It uses Puron as a refrigerant, which is far less harmful than Freon to reduce damage to the Earth’s ozone layer.
To find out how to have the Carrier 24ANA1 or other highly energy efficient air conditioners installed in your home, contact the Comfort Team.

As with any required standard, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) requirements for air conditioners tend to have both advocates and detractors. In today’s environment and energy-conscious world, increases in SEER rating seem like an obvious solution. But there are some common concerns. One of the biggest concerns is that the extra costs of a highly efficient air conditioner, with a SEER rating of 18 or more, will hurt people with lower income. But many people with low incomes rent their homes and thus benefit from the lower electric bills while not having to pay the cost of the air conditioner itself. Also, those that do own their own homes see the same benefits as wealthier people. It turns out that the increase in the price of an air conditioner with a higher SEER rating is negligible and is made up in electric bill savings in only a few years.

Imagine living in the future. Imagine walking into your home to have the heat pump automatically sense who you are and what temperature you like to keep your rooms. Imagine an air conditioner that automatically adjusts itself to ensure that it keeps you comfortable while also reducing your power bill. Imagine the same air conditioner automatically reducing the temperature when you work out in your home, and increase it slightly to save energy when you relax.
Something of this nature might have been seen at the World’s Fair. In truth, we have not achieved this future, and many elements of it are pure fantasy. But we can still ensure a comfortable, energy efficient home in a way that does not require mind-reading thermostats and telepathic air conditioners. With energy-efficient heat pumps and quality thermostats, we can still ensure that our home is comfortable, our electric bills are low, and be happy no matter what Phoenix’s weather might be.

If humans are indeed causing the current global warming trends, then every little thing we can do to cut down on the emission of substances that cause global warming helps. According to an Associated Press story released today, governments will have to spend billions of dollars more than they currently spend in order to stop the worst of the climate change. This revelation is part of the final report of a United Nations scientific panel put together two years ago to study the topic.
Among the recommendations is that new construction should be restricted to land 40 inches above sea level or higher, and take measures to greatly reduce fossil fuel emissions worldwide. This may sound drastic, but if international scientists are correct on this, they may be neccessary steps in reducing the damage the warming will cause… solving the problem at the macro level.
Some people may interpret these recommendations as being so severe that small things cannot help. They would be mistaken. Human-caused global warming does not have to be reduced by multi-billion dollar government efforts. If we as citizens do what we can, such turning off the lights when we are not using them and walking instead of driving, then we can help the macro-level efforts. This is improving the environment at the micro-level. Trane and other companies sell Energy Star air conditioners. The power savings found in these devices contributes to solving the problem. Each system’s improvement may only be a drop in the bucket, but if you put enough drops in a bucket, it will eventually be full.

If you were looking at purchasing a new air conditioning system 10 years ago, the most efficient systems available at that time would today just barely qualify for the minimum efficiency’s allowed under the new federal efficiency standards. In other words if your system is a decade old, you could have a real opportunity to save money by investing in a modern energy efficient upgrade.
Air conditioners have an efficiency rating system that works a little like the automobile’s MPG or miles per gallon ratings. The air conditioner comes with a SEER rating (seasonal energy efficiency rating). This is the cooling output divided by the power input for a hypothetical average U.S. climate. Simply stated, the higher the SEER rating the more efficient the system. Many homeowners do not realize the “poor mileage” they are getting from their current system. Systems that do not seem very old are commonly operating under the 5 or 6 SEER level.
As of January 2006, manufactures can no longer produce air conditioning systems with less than 13 SEER ratings. This new high minimum has created competition for higher efficiency and the availability of some remarkably efficient systems. Some of today’s most efficient air conditioning systems have surpassed the 20 SEER ratings range.
In Arizona’s desert climate we use our air conditioners more than many other parts of the country. The federal minimum efficiency standards do not make separate recommendations for those areas of the country where this usage is greater. In Arizona it pays to invest in high efficiency beyond the minimum 13 SEER level.
Imagine upgrading from a 5 or 6 SEER rating to a 21 SEER system. If you can reduce you air conditioning bill by 60 to 70% you will begin to see how investing in efficiency makes sense. In fact, it’s hard to find another investment that is as consistent or predictable.

When you think of what is going on with the world today, especially when one considers greenhouse gas emissions going up and not down one automatically assumes global warming. In fact, this is the most common theory. Hurricane Katrina and all the other disasters the world has dealt with and the record highs of winter last year seem to lend strong support for this theory. However there has come reason to doubt that the massive destruction to the environment is indeed causing a global rise in temperature. The 2006-07 winter blizzards across the United States have brought a chill on the subject. Unusually strong winter weather events throughout the country have lent credibility to this theory. Events such as eastern Colorado, New Mexico and Kansas seeing four consecutive blizzards in which Colorado declared not one, but multiple states of emergency, major interstates throughout the Southwest were closed, and many people were left stranded in the middle of nowhere. Northern Los Angeles and Scottsdale even saw snow, and these are places which don’t even know there are more than two maybe three seasons, winter not included. As for states which know a fourth season, Texas saw less than a salt shaker worth of de-icing salt this past year from because Colorado had a need to use it all. While Snow is certainly a lot easier to deal with than a large hurricane, can we really think of global warming with all this ice around us? And is this an indicator of an eventful summer to come?

In many places, there has been a recent emphasis on sustainable development. Instead of creating highly inefficient buildings and equipment, engineers and architects have begun to design systems that use less energy and thus are more environmentally friendly. With building construction, this means supplementing conventional electrical lines and massive heating, ventilation, and cooling systems with alternatives that use less energy. Some buildings now have solar panels on their roofs to supplement conventional power with a clean power source. Others use natural ventilation systems that use careful design to facilitate airflow without relying as much on industrial fans and pumps.
One of the principal elements of Frank Lloyd Wright’s building designs was that they seem to blend in with the natural landscape around them. His designs often mimicked the natural contours and colors of the terrain, creating a visual continuity with the land that is lost in most contemporary architecture. Beyond this, he used what can be considered an early form of sustainable development. Many of Wright’s designs, especially in the Phoenix area, utilized intelligent placement and size of windows in order to naturally keep the buildings cooler in summer by not letting in as much light.
Overall, sustainable development reduces electrical costs, heating and cooling costs, and environmental destruction will still allowing for comfort living and all the things that we take for granted.
